Sound familiar?
VAT deadline on Friday. Numbers still a mess.
Most small business owners do not set out to file late or miss an input VAT claim. It happens because the books are not quite current, the quarter crept up, or no one flagged that the annual turnover figure just crossed £90,000. HMRC does not ask whether you were busy. The penalty arrives regardless.
- Quarterly deadline arrives before the records are anywhere near ready to file
- Not certain whether you should have registered for VAT already this year
- Unsure which purchases qualify as input VAT and what you are leaving on the table
What sorted looks like
When the books are current and the returns are handled, VAT becomes the thing that just happens in the background. No scramble, no guesswork, no unwelcome letters.
- Returns prepared from clean, up-to-date Xero records — no last-minute scramble
- VAT threshold monitored throughout the year so registration obligations never arrive as a surprise
- Input VAT reviewed every quarter so you claim back every penny you are entitled to
- Fixed monthly fee agreed upfront — no surprise bills, no hourly rates adding up quietly
What Torquay businesses say about us
Clients across Devon come to DG Accountancy for straightforward compliance and the confidence that deadlines are being watched so they do not have to be.
Professional service. This company does my accounts every year and i never have to worry about it. Speedy as well. I am a very happy customer.
I worked with Daniel at DG Accountancy to review and sign off my sole trader accounts for a time-sensitive mortgage application, and the service was excellent. Daniel was extremely responsive, clear, and professional throughout. He understood exactly what the lender required, turned everything around very quickly without cutting corners. Communication was straightforward and reassuring, which made a potentially stressful part of the mortgage process much easier. Fees were transparent, turnaround was fast, and the work was done thoroughly and accurately. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Daniel to anyone needing reliable accountancy support, particularly where deadlines really matter.
Everything your VAT compliance needs
VAT returns sit inside a broader compliance picture. DG Accountancy handles the filing and the context around it — registration, scheme selection, MTD setup and the bookkeeping that makes it all straightforward.
Quarterly VAT Returns Filed
Your VAT return is prepared from reconciled Xero records and submitted to HMRC before the deadline. Every return is reviewed for accuracy before it goes, including a check on input VAT to make sure nothing claimable has been missed. You receive confirmation once it is filed.
Included in Operate, Grow and Scale packagesMTD Compliance and Xero Setup
Making Tax Digital for VAT requires digital record-keeping and software-based filing. Your Xero account is configured to meet MTD requirements from the start, with bank feeds connected and records kept current. No scramble to get compliant before a deadline.
Included as standardVAT Registration and Scheme Advice
Whether you are approaching the registration threshold, need to register voluntarily, or want to understand whether the Flat Rate, Cash Accounting or Annual Accounting scheme suits your business, Daniel can advise clearly and handle the registration with HMRC. You will understand the options before any decision is made.

Great Advice, Saved Money on Expenses
“Daniel was very helpful with my books and tax return. He offered great advise and insight in how to manage my books better and more efficiently. His knowledge in tax law and what can be used for expenses really helped with saving money where I could.”
What makes the difference on VAT
Any accountant can submit a VAT return. The question is whether yours is being watched closely, filed correctly and structured in a way that suits your business.
No Missed Claims, Ever
Input VAT is checked on every return — not just the obvious purchases but the less obvious ones that often get skipped. Daniel has worked across construction, hospitality and professional services, so he knows where the claimable costs tend to sit in different types of business. A return that has been properly reviewed is considerably less likely to leave money behind.
Deadlines Handled, Not Chased
The quarterly deadline is in the diary long before it arrives. Your records are kept current in Xero so there is no last-minute scramble to pull figures together. You will not receive a frantic message asking for bank statements the day before the return is due.
Plain English on Every Decision
VAT scheme options, partial exemption, the implications of going over the threshold — these things matter and they are not always obvious. Daniel explains each one in plain English so you understand what you are agreeing to before it happens, not after.
Up and running in four steps
Most clients are fully onboarded within a week. The process is straightforward and Daniel handles the parts that would otherwise take up your time.

Onboarding and Xero setup

VAT handled, quarter after quarter
Your returns are prepared and filed each quarter from current, accurate records. You receive confirmation once each return is submitted and a plain-English summary if anything warrants your attention. Your VAT is the thing that just happens — which is, frankly, the way it should be.
“Excellent service providing financial accounts for probate. Quick, efficient and friendly. Would highly recommend.”
A few things people usually ask
Does Making Tax Digital apply to my VAT and what does that actually mean in practice?
If your taxable turnover is above the VAT registration threshold, MTD for VAT already applies to you — you are required to keep digital records and file using MTD-compatible software. DG Accountancy sets up your Xero account to meet those requirements from the start, so MTD compliance is built into the process rather than something you need to think about separately. If you are currently filing through HMRC’s older portal, the switch is straightforward and Daniel handles it.
What does having my VAT returns handled actually cost?
VAT return filing is included as standard in the Operate, Grow and Scale monthly packages, which start from £195 per month. On the Start package it is available as an add-on. All fees are fixed and agreed upfront — there are no hourly rates and no additional charge each time a return is filed. A free quote takes roughly ten minutes and covers everything that would be included.
My VAT records are behind. Can you still take over mid-quarter or sort out a backlog?
Yes, and it is fairly common. Most clients who switch accountants mid-year have records in some state of disarray. Daniel will carry out a catch-up exercise to get the books current before the next return is due. The cost of any catch-up work is quoted separately and agreed upfront before anything starts, so there are no surprises about what that involves.
Is there a long-term contract or a notice period if I want to leave?
No long-term contract. If you decide DG Accountancy is not the right fit, you give reasonable notice and leave with your Xero records in good order and all filings up to date. There is no exit fee and no awkward conversation about breaking a commitment. The aim is to make staying the easy choice, not to make leaving the difficult one.
Which VAT scheme is right for my business — standard, flat rate or cash accounting?
It depends on your turnover, margin structure and the proportion of VATable purchases in your business. The Flat Rate Scheme can reduce the admin burden and occasionally improve cash flow for service businesses with low input costs; Cash Accounting suits businesses with variable payment timings; the standard method is right for most. Daniel will look at your specific position and explain which scheme makes sense before any decision is made — you will not be moved onto a scheme without understanding what it means.
Can you check whether I have been claiming all the input VAT I am entitled to on past returns?
Yes. If you have been filing your own returns or using a previous accountant and you suspect something has been missed, Daniel can review historical returns and advise on whether an error correction or voluntary disclosure is appropriate. HMRC has a formal process for correcting errors, and catching them proactively is considerably better than HMRC finding them first.
VAT sorted, quarter after quarter.
Fixed monthly fee, MTD-compliant records in Xero, and an ACCA-qualified accountant who files your returns accurately and answers questions the day you ask them.
