Sound familiar?

VAT should not take this long to think about.

For most Exeter business owners, VAT is not the hard part of running a business — it is just the part that keeps coming back. Quarterly deadlines, digital records, scheme choices, HMRC notices. Left to manage alone, it takes up time and mental energy that would be better spent elsewhere. And a mistake costs more than an accountant would have.

  • ✕ Quarterly VAT deadlines landing before the books are ready
  • ✕ Uncertainty about whether your VAT scheme is the right one for your turnover
  • ✕ Making Tax Digital requirements still not properly set up or understood

What sorted looks like

Your VAT is filed on time, every quarter, without you lifting a spreadsheet. The right scheme is confirmed upfront, your MTD software is connected, and any HMRC correspondence gets a sensible response before it becomes a problem.

  • ✓ Returns prepared and submitted each quarter well before the deadline
  • ✓ Scheme reviewed at the outset so you are not overpaying or on the wrong structure
  • ✓ Making Tax Digital set up in Xero so your records meet the requirement automatically
  • ✓ Fixed monthly fee agreed upfront — no hourly rates, no surprise invoices

What Exeter clients say about us

Responsiveness and clarity come up consistently. These are two things most businesses find missing from their current accountant.

★★★★★

I worked with Daniel at DG Accountancy to review and sign off my sole trader accounts for a time-sensitive mortgage application, and the service was excellent. Daniel was extremely responsive, clear, and professional throughout. He understood exactly what the lender required, turned everything around very quickly without cutting corners. Communication was straightforward and reassuring, which made a potentially stressful part of the mortgage process much easier. Fees were transparent, turnaround was fast, and the work was done thoroughly and accurately. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Daniel to anyone needing reliable accountancy support, particularly where deadlines really matter.

What you get

VAT compliance, fully handled

Three core components make up a well-run VAT service. All are included or available as a clear add-on, with nothing hidden in the small print.

01

Quarterly VAT Returns Filed

Your VAT return is prepared from your Xero records each quarter and submitted to HMRC before the deadline. You see the figures and the payment due before anything is filed — no surprises, just a clear number and a confirmation.

Included as standard
02

Making Tax Digital Compliance

MTD requires digital records and direct software submission — not a spreadsheet emailed to your accountant. Your Xero account is set up to meet the requirement from day one, and stays compliant as the rules develop. No scramble when HMRC extends the mandate.

Set up and maintained
03

VAT Registration and Scheme Advice

Whether you are approaching the registration threshold, recently registered, or wondering whether the Flat Rate Scheme makes sense for your trade, the options are explained clearly and the numbers run properly. The right scheme for your business is not always the obvious one.

Why DG Accountancy

What makes the difference in practice

Most accountants file your VAT return. Fewer explain what it means, flag risks early, or answer the phone when you call.

📋

VAT threshold watched for you

Crossing the VAT registration threshold without knowing it is one of the more avoidable problems a small business can have. Your turnover is monitored as part of the service so that registration — voluntary or mandatory — is planned in advance. You will not discover a liability after the fact.

💬

Plain English on every scheme

Standard, Flat Rate, Cash Accounting, Annual Accounting — the differences matter and the right choice depends on your margins, your sector and your cashflow pattern. Daniel explains the trade-offs in language that does not require an accounting qualification to understand, so you make the decision with full information.

Questions answered the same day

An HMRC letter arrives. A customer asks whether you can zero-rate a supply. Your bank wants a VAT summary. DG Accountancy is known for fast replies — you will not be chasing a response for three days on something that needs an answer today.

Getting started

Up and running in four steps

Most clients are fully onboarded within a week. The process is designed to require as little from you as possible.

1

Book a free discovery call

A short conversation about your business, your current VAT situation and what you need. No sales pitch — just an honest discussion about whether DG Accountancy is the right fit for you.

2

Receive your fixed-fee quote

You will get a clear, written quote covering exactly what is included. Everything is agreed upfront, so there are no additional charges when a question takes ten minutes to answer.

3

Xero set up and connected

Your Xero account is configured for MTD, your bank feeds connected, and your VAT settings confirmed. If your records need tidying from a previous period, that is scoped and quoted separately — no hidden catch-up fees.

4

VAT handled from here on

Each quarter your return is prepared, reviewed with you and filed. You know what you owe before HMRC does. The VAT side of your business is off your plate, and you have an accountant who will actually pick up when something needs discussing.

“Daniel was very helpful with my books and tax return. He offered great advise and insight in how to manage my books better and more efficiently. His knowledge in tax law and what can be used for expenses really helped with saving money where I could. As a sole trader it’s really hard to keep on top of things and have now asked Dan to do monthly books for me. His rates are extremely good compared to some other accountants out there and I get more for my money.”

Questions

Things Exeter businesses usually ask

Do you handle VAT for businesses in Exeter even though you are based in Torquay?+

Yes. DG Accountancy is a fully online practice, which means location has no bearing on the service. Exeter clients are set up on Xero, bank feeds connected remotely, and everything from VAT preparation to HMRC submission is handled digitally. There is no reason to use a local firm if the online alternative is more responsive and better qualified.

What does VAT specialist support cost, and what is included?+

VAT returns are included within the Operate, Grow and Scale limited company packages, which start from £195 per month, or available as a standalone add-on on the Start package. Sole trader VAT filing is included in the higher tier package from £99 per month. All fees are fixed and agreed upfront — no hourly rates and no additional charge when a question comes in between quarters.

My VAT records are a mess from a previous period. Can you still help?+

Reasonably often. Businesses arriving with records in disarray is not unusual. If catch-up work is needed, it is scoped before any commitment is made so you know exactly what it will cost to get things current. Once the backlog is cleared, the ongoing quarterly service runs from clean books and there are no further surprises.

Is there a long-term contract, or can I leave if it is not working?+

There is no long-term lock-in. Monthly rolling arrangements mean you can give notice and leave with your records exported and in good order. The aim is to earn continued engagement through the quality of the service, not through contractual obligation.

Which VAT scheme is right for my business — Flat Rate, Standard or something else?+

It depends on your margins, sector and cashflow. The Flat Rate Scheme can reduce administration and occasionally save money, but it is not always beneficial — particularly for businesses with high input VAT. The Cash Accounting Scheme can help with cashflow if customers pay slowly. Daniel will run the numbers for your specific situation before recommending anything.

How far in advance will I know what my VAT payment is going to be?+

As a general rule, your VAT return is prepared and reviewed with you before it is submitted, which means you see the liability due before HMRC does. With monthly Xero bookkeeping in place, a reasonable estimate of the quarter’s VAT position is visible at any point — useful for cashflow planning rather than discovering the figure on payment day.
