  • Self Assessment filed accurately and well before the deadline
  • Know your tax bill months ahead, not in January
  • Expenses identified and claimed correctly — no guesswork

No long-term contract. If it is not working after three months, you leave with clean books and nothing owed.

Sound familiar?

Still doing your own tax returns at midnight in January?

Freelancing means you are both the business and the admin department. Self Assessment, expense tracking, VAT thresholds, Making Tax Digital — it all lands on you, usually at the worst possible time. Most freelancers either miss legitimate expenses or file late because the whole thing got pushed to the back of the queue.

  • Self Assessment filed late or guessed at because it kept getting postponed
  • No clear idea what your tax bill will be until HMRC sends the calculation
  • Legitimate expenses missed because you were not sure what qualified

What sorted looks like for freelancers

Your compliance is handled throughout the year, not scrambled for in January. You know what you owe, what you can claim, and when everything is due — without needing to become a tax expert yourself.

  • Self Assessment filed accurately and on time, every year, without chasing you for it
  • Tax liability calculated quarterly so you can set money aside with confidence
  • Expenses reviewed and claimed correctly — nothing missed, nothing guessed at
  • Fixed monthly fee agreed upfront — no surprise bills at year end

What self-employed clients say after working with us

Freelancers and sole traders who were doing it all themselves — until they stopped. Here is what the transition actually looked like.

★★★★★

Huge thanks to Daniel for helping ourselves with our taxes! Being self employed means we all have to do this ourselves which is just not possible on top of our work load. Thanks again! We will be using you again!

Daniel was very helpful with my books and tax return. He offered great advise and insight in how to manage my books better and more efficiently. His knowledge in tax law and what can be used for expenses really helped with saving money where I could. As a sole trader it’s really hard to keep on top of things and have now asked Dan to do monthly books for me. His rates are extremely good compared to some other accountants out there and I get more for my money.

What you get

Everything a freelancer actually needs

Three core areas that cover the compliance and planning side of freelance life — handled monthly, not once a year in a panic.

01

Self Assessment, Done Properly

Your personal tax return is filed accurately and on time — no last-minute rush, no missed income sources. All allowable expenses are identified and claimed, and your tax liability is communicated clearly before it falls due. You leave January knowing exactly where you stand.

Included as standard
02

Bookkeeping and Cloud Accounts

Monthly bookkeeping in Xero keeps your records current and MTD-ready throughout the year. Bank feeds connect automatically, so there is no shoebox of receipts to hand over at year end. You have a real-time view of income and outgoings whenever you need it.

Xero included
03

Tax Planning and VAT Compliance

Your VAT threshold is monitored throughout the year, so a registration obligation never comes as a surprise. Quarterly check-ins flag planning opportunities — whether that is timing income, structuring expenses, or considering whether incorporation makes financial sense. Proactive, not reactive.

Consistent results across different clients

From first-time sole traders to established freelancers, the pattern is consistent — clear communication, fast work, fees that make sense.

Responsive and Accurate Under Deadline Pressure

“I worked with Daniel at DG Accountancy to review and sign off my sole trader accounts for a time-sensitive mortgage application, and the service was excellent. Daniel was extremely responsive, clear, and professional throughout. He understood exactly what the lender required, turned everything around very quickly without cutting corners. Communication was straightforward and reassuring, which made a potentially stressful part of the mortgage process much easier. Fees were transparent, turnaround was fast, and the work was done thoroughly and accurately. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Daniel to anyone needing reliable accountancy support, particularly where deadlines really matter.”

Why DG Accountancy

What makes the difference for freelancers

There are plenty of accountants. The ones worth switching to tend to share three characteristics.

🎯

You Work With Daniel Directly

No juniors, no account managers, no being passed around. Daniel handles your work personally and has done for every client since founding the practice. That means consistent advice from someone who already knows your income pattern, your expenses and your situation — without you explaining it again every time.

💬

Plain English, Not Jargon

Self-employed tax involves enough complexity without cryptic emails and unexplained calculations. Daniel explains what your tax bill is, how it was arrived at, and what you can do about it — in language that makes sense. Most clients report understanding their finances better within the first quarter than they did after years of DIY filing.

Questions Answered the Same Day

Freelancers often need a quick answer before invoicing a client, taking on a new contract or making a purchase decision. DG Accountancy is known for fast replies — a question sent in the morning typically gets a clear, useful answer that day. Which is, frankly, the way it should be.

Getting started

Up and running in four straightforward steps

Most freelancers are fully onboarded within a week. Here is how the process works from first contact to compliance handled.

1

Book a free discovery call

A 20-minute call to talk through your situation, how your business is structured and what you need from an accountant. No sales pitch — just an honest conversation about whether this is the right fit.

2

Receive your fixed-fee quote

You will receive a clear, written quote covering every service included in your package. Everything is agreed upfront so there are no surprises when invoices arrive. If the scope changes, that conversation happens before the work does.

3

Onboarding and Xero setup

Your Xero account is set up or tidied up, bank feeds connected, and any catch-up bookkeeping assessed. Most clients are fully onboarded within a week. You do not need to do much beyond providing access.

4

Compliance handled, questions answered

Your Self Assessment, bookkeeping and any VAT obligations run on schedule without you having to track deadlines. You get proactive updates when anything needs attention and clear answers whenever you have a question. Considerably less to think about than before.

Questions

Things freelancers usually ask before signing up

I have multiple income streams — employment, freelance work and some rental income. Can you handle all of that in one Self Assessment?+

Yes, this is a fairly common situation. Your Self Assessment will include all UK income sources — freelance income, any employment income under PAYE, rental income and anything else that needs to be declared. The return is prepared accurately across all sources, with any relevant reliefs and allowances applied. You will know the figure before it is filed, not after.

How much does it cost and what is included in the monthly fee?+

Sole trader packages start from £41 per month with a 50% discount for the first three months. The fee covers your Self Assessment, dedicated accountant access, HMRC registration if needed, Making Tax Digital compliance and unlimited invoicing through Xero. VAT filing is included in the higher tier or available as an add-on. Everything is agreed in writing before work starts — no hourly rates, no surprise bills.

My books are in a real mess. Can you still help, and what does catch-up work cost?+

Disorganised records are not unusual — most new clients arrive with books in some state of disarray. The catch-up work is scoped during onboarding and priced separately and transparently before anything starts. Once the backlog is cleared, monthly bookkeeping keeps everything current going forward. It is a one-time effort to get to a clean position, not an ongoing penalty.

Is there a minimum contract term? What happens if I want to leave?+

There is no long-term lock-in. Fees are billed monthly and you can leave with one month’s notice. If you decide to move on, your records are kept up to date and transferred cleanly to your new accountant. You leave with everything you need and nothing outstanding.

Making Tax Digital for Income Tax is coming for self-employed people — do I need to do anything now?+

MTD for Income Tax Self Assessment will apply to self-employed individuals with qualifying income above the threshold, with phased roll-out in progress. As a client, your Xero setup is already configured to be MTD-compatible, so there is nothing additional to do when the rules apply to you. The transition will not require any scramble on your part.

How do I know what expenses I can legitimately claim as a freelancer?+

Allowable expenses for self-employed people cover a broader range than most freelancers realise — home office costs, equipment, software subscriptions, professional development, travel and more, subject to the usual HMRC rules on being wholly and exclusively for business. During onboarding, your expense categories are reviewed properly so nothing reasonable is missed. If a purchase comes up during the year and you are unsure, that is exactly the kind of question that gets answered the day you ask it.
