Sound familiar?
CIS admin adding up faster than your day rate?
For most contractors and subcontractors in Torbay, CIS sits somewhere between irritating and genuinely risky. Miss a monthly return and HMRC issues an automatic penalty. Forget to verify a subcontractor before paying them and the deduction rate jumps to 30%. And if your own CIS deductions are not being offset properly, you are effectively giving HMRC an interest-free loan.
- Monthly CIS returns missed or filed late, triggering automatic HMRC penalties
- Subcontractors paid at the wrong deduction rate due to skipped verification
- CIS deductions suffered not being reclaimed, leaving money with HMRC unnecessarily
What CIS sorted looks like
The compliance side runs on a schedule — returns filed, subcontractors verified, deduction statements issued. The money side is watched too, so your suffered deductions come back through your Self Assessment or Corporation Tax return rather than sitting with HMRC.
- Monthly returns filed before the 19th, every month — no penalties, no chasing
- Every subcontractor verified through HMRC before payment, correct rate applied
- Suffered CIS deductions tracked and offset against your tax liability each year
- Fixed monthly fee agreed upfront — you know exactly what this costs
What Torbay contractors say
Compliance sorted, questions answered promptly, and no unpleasant surprises from HMRC — which is, frankly, the standard you should expect.
I worked with Daniel at DG Accountancy to review and sign off my sole trader accounts for a time-sensitive mortgage application, and the service was excellent. Daniel was extremely responsive, clear, and professional throughout. He understood exactly what the lender required, turned everything around very quickly without cutting corners. Communication was straightforward and reassuring, which made a potentially stressful part of the mortgage process much easier. Fees were transparent, turnaround was fast, and the work was done thoroughly and accurately. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Daniel to anyone needing reliable accountancy support, particularly where deadlines really matter.
Daniel was very helpful with my books and tax return. He offered great advise and insight in how to manage my books better and more efficiently. His knowledge in tax law and what can be used for expenses really helped with saving money where I could. As a sole trader it’s really hard to keep on top of things and have now asked Dan to do monthly books for me. His rates are extremely good compared to some other accountants out there and I get more for my money.
CIS compliance, front to back
From verifying subbies and filing monthly returns to recovering the deductions taken from your own invoices — the full CIS picture, not just the forms.
Monthly CIS Returns Filed
Your monthly contractor return is submitted to HMRC by the 19th, every month, without you having to remember it. Subcontractors are verified through HMRC before each payment so the correct deduction rate is applied from day one. No penalties for late returns, no guesswork on rates.
Included as standardDeduction Statements for Subbies
Your subcontractors need a CIS deduction statement each month showing what has been deducted and why. Those go out on time, so your subbies can reclaim against their own tax bills and you stay onside with your obligations. It is one of those things that causes disproportionate friction if it is missed.
Included as standardCIS Deductions Recovered for You
If contractors are deducting CIS from your invoices, that money needs to come back through your Self Assessment or Corporation Tax return — it does not happen automatically unless it is claimed correctly. Your suffered deductions are tracked throughout the year and offset against your liability, so nothing sits with HMRC longer than it needs to.

Why construction contractors choose us
There are plenty of generalist accountants in Torbay. Fewer who already understand how CIS, subbies and construction cashflow actually work.
Construction experience, not just theory
Daniel has worked in construction accounting, so the conversation starts from a different place. You will not need to explain what a subbies-only job looks like, why retentions sit on the balance sheet for months, or why your cashflow dips every January. The practical realities of construction work are already understood.
Questions answered the day you ask
CIS throws up questions that need an answer before the next payment run, not three days later. DG Accountancy is known for fast replies and clear communication — you get a direct line to Daniel, not a helpdesk ticket. Which means the verification gets done, the return gets filed, and work carries on.
No surprises in your tax bill
Suffered CIS deductions are tracked from the moment they appear on your invoices, not picked up at year end when the damage is already done. Your running tax position is visible throughout the year, so the figure that lands on your Self Assessment or CT600 is one you have already seen coming.

Compliance runs, you get on with work
Your monthly returns go in on time, your subbies receive their deduction statements, and your suffered deductions are tracked against your tax bill. You stop thinking about CIS administration because there is nothing left for you to remember.
“Professional service. This company does my accounts every year and i never have to worry about it. Speedy as well. I am a very happy customer.”
Common questions about CIS returns
Do you handle CIS for both contractors and subcontractors, or just one side?
Both. If you are a contractor paying subbies, we handle the monthly return, verify subcontractors through HMRC, and issue deduction statements. If you are a subcontractor having deductions taken from your invoices, we track those and reclaim them through your Self Assessment or Corporation Tax return. Some clients are both contractor and subcontractor simultaneously, which we manage as a matter of course.
What does CIS returns support cost, and what is included?
Pricing is a fixed monthly fee agreed upfront — no hourly rates and no surprise invoices at year end. The fee covers CIS monthly returns, subcontractor verification, deduction statements, and coordination with your payroll and tax return where relevant. The exact figure depends on how many subcontractors you work with and what other compliance you need. The free discovery call is the quickest way to get a number.
I have missed some CIS returns — can you sort that out?
Yes. HMRC issues automatic penalties for late returns, but those can often be reduced or cancelled on first offence if there is a reasonable excuse. We will review what is outstanding, file the missing returns, and handle any penalty correspondence. Catch-up work is scoped and priced separately before we start so you know what you are committing to.
Is there a long-term contract?
No. There is no minimum term beyond the initial three months, and you are not locked in. If you want to leave, you give notice and we hand everything over cleanly — HMRC authorisations transferred, records exported, nothing held back. The relationship should work because it is useful, not because you are tied in.
Can you help if I want to apply for gross payment status?
Yes. Gross payment status means HMRC pays you without deducting CIS, which is considerably better for cashflow if you qualify. There are three tests — business, turnover and compliance — and we can assess whether you meet them, prepare the application, and deal with HMRC if they query anything. It is worth reviewing if your annual turnover from construction work is above £30,000 as a sole trader or higher thresholds for partnerships and companies.
How do I know how much CIS I have had deducted this year?
If we are handling your books, your suffered CIS deductions are recorded as they come in and visible in your Xero account at any point. Before your tax return is filed, we reconcile the total against deduction statements received and set it off against your tax liability. If deductions exceed your tax bill, HMRC owes you a refund — and we make sure it is claimed.
