Sound familiar?
CIS admin piling up between jobs?
Monthly CIS returns have a fixed deadline and no tolerance for guesswork. Miss the 19th and there is a penalty regardless of how busy the site is. For many Torquay contractors and subcontractors, it is not that they do not care — it is that it sits at the bottom of the pile until it becomes urgent.
- Monthly returns missed or filed late, triggering automatic HMRC penalties
- Subcontractors chasing deduction statements you have not had time to produce
- Overpaid CIS tax sitting unclaimed because Self Assessment never got done
What handled looks like
When the returns go out on time every month, the penalties stop. Subcontractors get their statements without chasing. And at year end, any overpaid tax comes back rather than sitting quietly with HMRC.
- Returns filed before the 19th every month, no reminders needed from you
- Deduction statements produced and issued each period as a matter of course
- Overpaid CIS tax reclaimed at year end through accurate Self Assessment
- Fixed monthly fee agreed upfront — no surprise bills after a busy quarter
What construction clients say
Contractors and sole traders in Devon working with Daniel on bookkeeping, tax and compliance. A sample of what they found.
Daniel was very helpful with my books and tax return. He offered great advise and insight in how to manage my books better and more efficiently. His knowledge in tax law and what can be used for expenses really helped with saving money where I could. As a sole trader it’s really hard to keep on top of things and have now asked Dan to do monthly books for me. His rates are extremely good compared to some other accountants out there and I get more for my money.
Huge thanks to Daniel for helping ourselves with our taxes! Being self employed means we all have to do this ourselves which is just not possible on top of our work load. Thanks again! We will be using you again!
Everything CIS compliance requires
From monthly contractor returns to subcontractor statements and year-end tax reclaims, the full CIS picture is covered under one fixed fee.
Monthly CIS Returns Filed
Your monthly return goes to HMRC before the 19th deadline, every month, without you having to track it. Contractor verification checks and deduction calculations are handled so the numbers are right first time. No late-filing penalties, no last-minute scramble.
Included as standardSubcontractor Deduction Statements
Every subcontractor who works for you is entitled to a monthly deduction statement. These go out on time so your subbies have the paperwork they need for their own tax returns. It also keeps your working relationships cleaner.
Included as standardCIS Tax Reclaimed at Year End
If you are a subcontractor with CIS deducted at source, there is a reasonable chance you have overpaid. Self Assessment is used to calculate the accurate figure and claim back any excess. Most subcontractors are owed something.
Via Self AssessmentConsistent results across different clients
From sole traders to limited companies across Devon, the same things come up: fast turnaround, clear communication, fees that make sense.

What makes the difference for construction businesses
CIS compliance is not complicated when it is properly managed. Here is what that actually looks like in practice.
Construction experience, not guesswork
Daniel’s 20-year background spans construction among other industries, which means CIS is familiar ground rather than something looked up on the day. Contractor-subcontractor relationships, gross payment status, verification — none of it needs explaining. You get answers, not research.
Replies the same day you ask
When a subcontractor calls asking where their deduction statement is, or HMRC sends a query, you want an answer quickly. DG Accountancy is known for fast responses — not because of a promise on a website, but because it is how the practice runs. Questions do not sit in an inbox for days.
CIS explained without the jargon
Gross payment status, net payment status, higher-rate deductions — the scheme has its own language and it is easy to end up doing the wrong thing without realising. Daniel explains your obligations in plain English so you know what applies to you and why, not just what button to press.
Up and running in four steps
Most CIS clients are fully set up within a week. The process is designed to require as little from you as possible.
Book a free discovery call
We will talk through your CIS situation — whether you are a contractor, a subcontractor or both — and what is currently working or not. No sales pitch, just an honest conversation about whether we are the right fit.
Receive your fixed-fee quote
You will get a written quote covering exactly which services are included and what they cost each month. Everything is agreed upfront so there are no conversations about bills later.
Onboarding and cloud setup
We gather your HMRC details, existing returns if any, and subcontractor records. Your Xero account is set up or tidied up, bank feeds connected, and the process put on a proper footing. Most clients are sorted within a week.
Returns filed, deadlines met
From the following month, your returns go out before the 19th without you having to think about it. Subcontractors get their statements, overpaid tax gets reclaimed, and CIS moves off your list of things to worry about. Which is frankly the way it should be.
“Absolutely recommend Daniel for all and any accounts related matter. Would use his expertise again. He is the most amazing person, very professional, explaining every detail meticulously in order to finalise our accounts. A huge thank you Daniel.”
Common questions about CIS returns
Do you handle both the contractor side and the subcontractor side of CIS?
Yes. If you are a contractor, that means filing the monthly return, verifying subcontractors with HMRC and issuing deduction statements. If you are a subcontractor, it means making sure your Self Assessment captures the CIS deducted and claims back any overpayment. Many construction businesses are both — employed by a main contractor on one job, using their own subbies on another. That is not unusual and is handled as a matter of course.
What does it cost and what is included?
Pricing is a fixed monthly fee based on whether you are a sole trader or limited company, the volume of subcontractors and the services required. Everything is written down and agreed before anything starts — no hourly rates, no surprise invoices at year end. New clients get 50% off the monthly fee for the first three months. A free quote takes about ten minutes.
My CIS returns are behind. Can you catch up?
Yes. Late or missing CIS returns are one of the more common starting points for new construction clients. The catch-up process involves pulling together your subcontractor payments, verifying any outstanding deductions and filing overdue returns with HMRC. There may be penalties already accrued — those are assessed honestly from the outset so there are no further surprises. Once caught up, the monthly process runs cleanly from there.
Am I tied in for a minimum term?
No minimum contract. Monthly rolling arrangement with one month’s notice. If it is not working for any reason, you leave with your records in order and nothing outstanding. The aim is to be worth keeping, not difficult to leave.
How does gross payment status work and can I apply for it?
Gross payment status allows a subcontractor to be paid in full without CIS deductions, then settle the tax themselves. HMRC grants it to subcontractors who meet turnover, compliance and business tests. If you think you might qualify, it is worth applying — it improves cash flow considerably. Daniel can assess whether you are likely to meet the criteria and handle the application.
How do I know if I have overpaid CIS tax and how much comes back?
CIS is deducted at either 20% (registered subcontractors) or 30% (unregistered), which often exceeds the actual tax owed on profits after expenses. The exact refund is calculated through Self Assessment, taking into account allowable expenses, other income and the deductions already suffered. Most subcontractors operating through Self Assessment find they are owed a refund — the amount depends on turnover and costs. That figure is known well before HMRC’s filing deadline.
