Sound familiar?

Still doing your own books between client jobs?

Most sole traders in Devon manage their accounts the same way: a folder of receipts, a spreadsheet that is six months behind, and a vague anxiety about what the tax bill might be. It works, until it does not. January comes around faster than expected, the records are a mess, and the accountant you find in a hurry charges accordingly.

  • Self Assessment filed at the last minute with receipts in no particular order
  • No idea what your actual tax bill is until HMRC tells you
  • Expenses missed because nobody explained what you can and cannot claim

What a sorted set of books looks like

Your accounts run on Xero, your records are current month by month, and your Self Assessment is prepared well ahead of the deadline. You know your tax position before HMRC does. Which is, frankly, the way it should be.

  • Self Assessment prepared early, filed accurately, no January scramble
  • Your tax liability calculated and visible months before it is due
  • Expenses reviewed properly so nothing claimable is left on the table
  • Fixed monthly fee from £41 — agreed upfront, no surprise bills

What sole traders in Devon say

Two sole trader clients on what working with DG Accountancy actually looks like — from first contact through to a filed return.

★★★★★

I worked with Daniel at DG Accountancy to review and sign off my sole trader accounts for a time-sensitive mortgage application, and the service was excellent. Daniel was extremely responsive, clear, and professional throughout. He understood exactly what the lender required, turned everything around very quickly without cutting corners. Communication was straightforward and reassuring, which made a potentially stressful part of the mortgage process much easier. Fees were transparent, turnaround was fast, and the work was done thoroughly and accurately. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Daniel to anyone needing reliable accountancy support, particularly where deadlines really matter.

Daniel was very helpful with my books and tax return. He offered great advise and insight in how to manage my books better and more efficiently. His knowledge in tax law and what can be used for expenses really helped with saving money where I could. As a sole trader it’s really hard to keep on top of things and have now asked Dan to do monthly books for me. His rates are extremely good compared to some other accountants out there and I get more for my money.

What you get

Everything a sole trader needs, covered

From registering with HMRC to filing your return and keeping your books current, the sole trader packages are built around how self-employed people in Devon actually work.

01

Your personal tax return is prepared from clean records, checked for every allowable expense, and filed well before the 31 January deadline. You will know your liability in advance — not when HMRC sends the demand. No last-minute rush, no penalties.

02

Monthly Bookkeeping in Xero

Your income and expenses are reconciled every month in Xero, keeping your records accurate, MTD-ready and accessible at any time. Bank feeds are connected so the manual work is minimal. Catch-up bookkeeping is also available if your records need tidying from a previous period.

VAT Returns and HMRC Registration

If you are registered for VAT or approaching the threshold, quarterly returns are filed on time and in line with Making Tax Digital requirements. Your VAT position is monitored so you will not cross the registration threshold without knowing about it first.

Why DG Accountancy

What makes this different from other accountants in Devon

There are plenty of accountants in Devon. Here is what actually distinguishes this practice.

🎯

20 Years Across Real Businesses

Daniel has worked in airlines, construction, manufacturing and entertainment — not just in an accountancy practice. That means he already understands the pressures sole traders face before you explain them. You get seasoned judgement on expenses, structure and tax, not a fresh graduate learning on your time.

Questions Answered the Day You Ask

DG Accountancy is built around responsiveness. If you send a question on a Tuesday morning, you get an answer on Tuesday — not at the end of the week, not after a chase. For sole traders managing everything alone, that matters more than most accountants acknowledge.

💬

Plain English, Not Accountant-Speak

Your Self Assessment, your allowable expenses, your MTD obligations — Daniel explains all of it in language that makes sense, not in acronyms and caveats. You will leave every conversation knowing exactly where you stand and what happens next.

Getting started

Up and running in four straightforward steps

Most sole traders are fully onboarded within a week. The process is designed to be low-effort on your side.

1

Book a free discovery call

A short call to understand your business, your current records and what you actually need. No sales pitch — just an honest conversation about whether this is the right fit. You will leave the call knowing exactly what happens next.

2

Receive your fixed-fee quote

A clear, written quote tailored to your business structure and the services you need. Everything is agreed upfront — no hourly surprises, no scope creep without discussion. You decide when you are ready.

3

Xero set up and onboarded

Your Xero account is set up (or tidied if you already have one), bank feeds are connected, and any outstanding bookkeeping is brought current. Most clients are fully onboarded within a week. You do very little of this yourself.

4

Compliance handled, questions answered

Your books run in the background, your Self Assessment is prepared well ahead of the deadline, and proactive advice comes as and when it is useful. Considerably less to think about — which is, in the end, the point.

Questions

Things sole traders usually ask

Do you understand the specific expenses sole traders in Devon can claim?+

Yes — allowable expenses vary considerably depending on your trade, whether you work from home, use a vehicle for business, or operate from multiple sites. Daniel has worked with sole traders across construction, hospitality, consultancy and the trades, so the conversation about expenses starts from a position of familiarity rather than guesswork. You will not need to explain your business from scratch to get a useful answer.

How much does sole trader accounting cost, and what is included?+

The sole trader packages start from £41 per month, billed monthly with a 50% discount for the first three months. Each package includes HMRC registration, a dedicated accountant, Making Tax Digital compliance, unlimited invoices and Self Assessment. VAT filing is included in the higher tier or available as an add-on. A written quote is agreed before anything starts — no hourly rates, no surprise bills.

My books are behind. Can you still take me on?+

Yes, and it is not unusual. Many new clients arrive with records in varying states of order. Catch-up bookkeeping is available to bring everything current before ongoing work begins. The cost of the catch-up is assessed and agreed upfront, so there are no surprises once the work starts. The important thing is getting the records straight — the state they are in now is rarely as bad as it feels.

Am I locked into a long contract?+

No. There is no long-term contract. The monthly packages run on a rolling basis, and if it is not working you leave with clean, current books and nothing owed beyond the services already delivered. The aim is to earn your business every month, not to hold it.

What happens if I need to register for VAT as my turnover grows?+

Your VAT threshold is monitored as part of the ongoing service. If you are approaching the £90,000 registration point, you will be told in advance — not after the fact. VAT registration, initial return setup and quarterly filings can be added to your package when the time comes, at a fixed agreed fee.

When will I know what my tax bill is going to be?+

Well before January, in most cases. Because the bookkeeping is kept current throughout the year, your Self Assessment can be prepared and reviewed months before the filing deadline. That gives you time to plan for the payment rather than finding out the amount when it is already due.

Ready when you are

Less to worry about, starting this week.

Fixed monthly fees from £41, an ACCA-qualified accountant who responds the same day, and sole trader accounts handled from bookkeeping through to Self Assessment — all agreed upfront.
