Construction Industry Accounts

Construction Industry Accountant

Construction accounts, handled properly.

Running a construction business means CIS deductions, reverse charge VAT and subcontractor records to stay on top of — on top of actually getting the work done. DG Accountancy handles the compliance side for builders, contractors and trades. Fixed monthly fee, ACCA-qualified, same-day replies.

  • CIS deductions tracked and reclaimed so nothing stays stuck with HMRC
  • Reverse charge VAT applied correctly before it causes a cash flow problem
  • Year-end accounts and Corporation Tax filed accurately and on time
  • Plain-English answers to HMRC questions without the wait

No long-term contract. If it is not working after three months, you leave with clean books and nothing owed.

Sound familiar?

Still not sure where your CIS money has gone?

Construction businesses carry a tax burden most other industries simply do not have. CIS deductions come off every payment before you see it, reverse charge VAT shifts the liability in ways that catch people out, and retentions make cash flow planning harder than it should be. Most accountants handle construction accounts the same way they handle a corner shop — which is not especially useful.

  • CIS deductions accumulating with HMRC while you wait to reclaim them
  • Reverse charge VAT applied inconsistently, creating compliance risk and cash flow gaps
  • Subcontractor and materials costs not categorised correctly, leaving money on the table at year-end

What a tidy set of books looks like

Construction compliance is manageable when someone actually knows the rules. CIS gets reclaimed promptly, VAT is applied correctly from the outset, and your year-end accounts reflect what you actually spent — not what got missed.

  • CIS deductions tracked monthly and reclaimed through Self Assessment or Corporation Tax
  • Reverse charge VAT handled correctly for every qualifying invoice, no gaps
  • Materials, plant and subcontractor costs categorised properly so your tax position is accurate
  • Fixed monthly fee agreed upfront — no surprise bills after a busy quarter

What trades and contractors say about working with us

From sole trader builders filing their first return to limited company contractors managing multiple subcontractors — here is what clients have said.

★★★★★

Daniel was very helpful with my books and tax return. He offered great advise and insight in how to manage my books better and more efficiently. His knowledge in tax law and what can be used for expenses really helped with saving money where I could. As a sole trader it’s really hard to keep on top of things and have now asked Dan to do monthly books for me. His rates are extremely good compared to some other accountants out there and I get more for my money.

I worked with Daniel at DG Accountancy to review and sign off my sole trader accounts for a time-sensitive mortgage application, and the service was excellent. Daniel was extremely responsive, clear, and professional throughout. He understood exactly what the lender required, turned everything around very quickly without cutting corners. Communication was straightforward and reassuring, which made a potentially stressful part of the mortgage process much easier. Fees were transparent, turnaround was fast, and the work was done thoroughly and accurately. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Daniel to anyone needing reliable accountancy support, particularly where deadlines really matter.

What you get

What your monthly fee covers

Construction accounting has specific moving parts. Here is how DG Accountancy handles them, month by month and at year-end.

01

CIS Returns and Deduction Management

Your CIS deductions are tracked every month and reconciled against payments made to subcontractors. Overpayments are reclaimed through your Self Assessment or Corporation Tax return — not left sitting idle with HMRC. Verification of new subcontractors and monthly CIS300 filings are handled as part of the service.

Included in applicable packages
02

VAT Returns and Reverse Charge Compliance

Reverse charge VAT applies across most construction services supplied to other VAT-registered businesses — and getting it wrong on either side of a transaction creates problems. Your VAT returns are prepared with the correct treatment applied to each invoice type. MTD-compliant filings, quarterly submissions and VAT registration are all handled.

Quarterly VAT filings included
03

Year-End Accounts and Tax Planning

Your year-end accounts are prepared from clean, reconciled records — not a backlog assembled in January. Capital allowances on plant and equipment, vehicle costs and materials are reviewed so your taxable profit reflects reality. Corporation Tax or Self Assessment returns are filed accurately and on time.

Year-end accounts and CT return included

Why DG Accountancy

Why construction businesses choose DG Accountancy

There are generalist accountants, and there are accountants who already know how construction works. The difference shows up in what does not go wrong.

🏗️

Construction experience, not just accounting

Daniel’s 20 years of hands-on experience includes direct work in the construction sector, which means CIS, reverse charge VAT and subcontractor compliance are not new territory. You will not spend the first meeting explaining how your payment structure works before getting anything useful back.

Answers arrive the same day

Construction moves quickly — a HMRC query, a VAT question on a new contract, a subcontractor status check. DG Accountancy is known for responding promptly, without making you chase. The right answer, the day you need it, without the runaround.

📊

Cash flow visibility in a retention-heavy trade

Retentions, long payment cycles and seasonal variation make cash flow harder to read in construction than most industries. Management accounts and cash flow forecasting — available on higher-tier packages — give you a clear picture of where the business stands before problems become urgent.

Getting started

Up and running in four steps

Most construction clients are fully onboarded within a week. Here is exactly what happens between your first enquiry and your compliance being in hand.

1

Book a free discovery call

A short conversation about your business, your current set-up and what you need sorted. No sales pitch — just an honest look at whether DG Accountancy is the right fit and what a quote would look like.

2

Receive your fixed-fee quote

A written quote is sent after the call, tailored to your structure — sole trader, limited company, payroll headcount, CIS obligations. Everything is agreed upfront, so no unexpected bills land six months in.

3

Onboarding and cloud setup

Your Xero account is set up or tidied up, bank feeds are connected, and any outstanding bookkeeping is identified. If there is catch-up work needed, it is scoped and priced separately before anything is touched.

4

Compliance runs, you focus on the work

CIS returns go out on time, VAT is filed correctly, year-end accounts land without a scramble. You get plain-English updates when something needs your attention — and silence when it does not, which is how it should be.

Questions

Things construction clients usually ask first

Do you understand CIS — deductions, monthly returns and reclaims?+

Yes. CIS is a standard part of the service for construction clients, not an add-on that needs explaining from scratch. Monthly CIS300 returns, subcontractor verification, tracking deductions suffered on your invoices and reclaiming overpayments through your tax return — all of this is handled as part of the ongoing compliance work.

What does it cost and what is included?+

Pricing is a fixed monthly fee agreed before you start — no hourly rates, no surprise invoices. The fee depends on your structure (sole trader or limited company), payroll headcount and which services you need. CIS returns and VAT are included within specific packages or available as clearly priced add-ons. A written quote is provided after a free discovery call, so you know the number before committing to anything.

My books are behind. Is that a problem?+

It is a fairly common starting point, particularly for tradespeople who have been managing everything themselves. Before onboarding, the catch-up work is reviewed and quoted separately so you know exactly what it costs to bring things current. Once the books are clean, ongoing monthly work runs smoothly from there.

Is there a long-term contract?+

No. There is no minimum term or exit penalty. If the arrangement is not working, you give notice and leave with your records in order and nothing outstanding. The aim is that the service earns your continued business each month, not a contract clause.

How does reverse charge VAT work and do you handle it correctly?+

Domestic reverse charge applies to most construction services supplied to other VAT-registered businesses in the construction industry — the customer accounts for the VAT rather than the supplier. Getting the direction wrong on an invoice creates compliance risk for both parties. Each client’s invoicing is reviewed so the correct treatment is applied from the start, and the VAT return reflects it accurately.

Can I see what my tax bill is likely to be before the year end?+

On the Grow and Scale packages, quarterly management accounts and cash flow forecasting give you a running view of your tax position throughout the year rather than a bill that arrives as a surprise in January. On lower-tier packages, an annual tax review is included. Either way, there is no reason to reach year-end without a reasonable idea of what is owed.
