Rates Better Than Other Accountants

“His rates are extremely good compared to some other accountants out there and I get more for my money.”

Sound familiar?

Three income sources. One very large tax bill you did not see coming.

Most doctors have more going on financially than a single employer. NHS salary, locum shifts, private clinic fees, and a pension arrangement that interacts with the annual allowance in ways that can trigger an unexpected charge. Filing a single Self Assessment that covers all of that accurately is not straightforward, and most general accountants do not encounter it often enough to get it right.

  • Unexpected annual allowance tax charge on NHS pension contributions
  • Locum and private income sitting unreconciled until January deadline
  • No clear picture of the total tax bill until it is already overdue

What sorted looks like for doctors

All income streams recorded, reconciled and reported correctly. Your NHS pension tax position reviewed before the year ends. Your Self Assessment filed accurately and on time, with the tax liability visible well in advance.

  • Annual allowance position reviewed so no charge arrives unannounced
  • Locum and private income reconciled monthly, not left to January
  • Tax bill visible at least three months before the payment deadline
  • Fixed monthly fee agreed upfront — no surprise invoice at year end

What you get

Everything a doctor’s finances actually need

From Self Assessment through to NHS pension tax planning and limited company compliance — handled in one place, at a fixed monthly fee.

01

Self Assessment for Doctors

Your return covers NHS salary, locum income, private practice fees and any investment or rental income in a single, accurate filing. You will not need to explain your income structure before getting a useful answer — it is already understood. Filed well before the January deadline, with your liability confirmed in advance.

Included as standard
02

NHS Pension Tax Planning

The annual allowance and lifetime allowance rules catch many doctors off guard, particularly as earnings grow. Your pension contributions are reviewed each year so the interaction with your taxable income is understood and any charge is planned for rather than a surprise. Scheme Pays elections handled where applicable.

Proactive, not reactive
03

Limited Company and Payroll

If you operate through a personal service company or private practice limited company, year-end accounts, Corporation Tax, payroll and dividend strategy are all included. The most tax-efficient split between salary and dividends is reviewed annually rather than left at default. Companies House filings handled on time.

Full compliance included

Why DG Accountancy

Why doctors choose DG Accountancy

Three things that matter when your finances are genuinely complicated.

🩺

No explaining your income structure

NHS salary, locum shifts, private practice fees and pension contributions are a familiar combination here. You will not spend the first thirty minutes of a call bringing an accountant up to speed. The questions asked will be about your specific numbers, not about how the NHS pension works.

Questions answered the same day

Doctors are time-poor by definition. When a question comes up — about an unexpected HMRC letter, a pension statement, or whether a new locum contract changes your tax position — it gets answered promptly. No waiting three days for a response to something that takes ten minutes to resolve.

📋

Fixed fee, nothing hidden

Fees are agreed upfront and do not change based on how many questions you ask during the year. There is no hourly rate running in the background. You know exactly what you are paying and exactly what that covers before any work begins.

Getting started

Up and running in four steps

Most doctors are fully onboarded within a week. The process is straightforward and most of the work is done for you.

1

Book a free discovery call

A conversation about your current setup — NHS employment status, any locum or private work, whether you operate through a limited company, and what has been handled (or not handled) previously. No sales pitch. Just an honest assessment of whether there is a fit.

2

Receive your fixed-fee quote

A written quote tailored to your income structure and the services you need. Everything is itemised and agreed before any work begins. No surprises.

3

Onboarding and cloud setup

Your Xero account is set up (or tidied up if one already exists), bank feeds connected, and prior year figures gathered. Most clients are fully onboarded within a week, with minimal effort required on their side.

4

Compliance handled, questions answered

Your returns are filed accurately and on time. Your tax position is visible throughout the year, not just in January. When your pension statement arrives or a locum contract changes, you have someone to ask the same day. Which is, frankly, how it should work.

Questions

Things doctors usually ask first

Do you understand the NHS pension annual allowance and how it affects my tax return?+

Yes. The NHS pension annual allowance charge is one of the more commonly mishandled areas in doctor tax returns, particularly as earnings grow through clinical excellence awards, private work or a move into partnership. The interaction between pension input and the tapered annual allowance is reviewed each year. Scheme Pays elections are handled where it is the right approach, and the figures fed correctly into your Self Assessment.

What does it cost, and what is included?+

Fees are fixed monthly and agreed in writing before any work starts. The exact fee depends on your income structure — whether you are a sole trader, operate through a limited company, have locum income, or a combination. There are no hourly rates running in the background and no charge for asking questions during the year. A new client promotion of 50% off the monthly fee for the first three months currently applies.

I have not filed a Self Assessment for a couple of years. Can you help with the backlog?+

Yes. Late or missing returns are a fairly common starting point and they are manageable. The priority is getting the outstanding filings submitted accurately to stop penalties accruing. Catch-up work is quoted separately and transparently before anything is started. Once the backlog is clear, ongoing compliance runs on the regular fixed fee.

Is there a long-term contract?+

No. There is no minimum term beyond the initial month. If it is not working after three months, you can leave with clean, up-to-date records and nothing owed. The aim is to be worth keeping, not contractually difficult to leave.

I work as a locum through my own limited company. Does that change what you cover?+

Not significantly. Limited company doctors and locum contractors are a standard part of the client base. Year-end accounts, Corporation Tax, payroll, dividend planning and Self Assessment for the director are all included within the relevant package. IR35 considerations for locum arrangements are also factored in where relevant.

How far in advance will I know my tax bill?+

The aim is that your tax liability for the year is visible at least three months before the January payment deadline — not estimated in December when there is little time to act. For doctors with more complex income or pension positions, a mid-year review is built into the process so there are no late surprises.
