Sound familiar?

Starting up without an accountant who knows the basics?

Most people launching a business in Devon are busy enough without untangling what structure to use, when to register for VAT, or how to stay on the right side of HMRC from day one. Mistakes made early tend to cost more to fix later. The compliance side of a new business is not complicated — it just needs to be done in the right order.

  • Not sure whether to trade as a sole trader or limited company
  • No idea when VAT registration becomes compulsory or what triggers it
  • Bookkeeping left until year-end, making the first accounts a scramble

What sorted looks like from day one

The right structure chosen, the registrations done, the books clean from the start. Getting the foundations right in the first year saves considerably more than it costs in later years.

  • Company or sole trader structure chosen with your specific situation in mind
  • VAT threshold monitored — no unexpected registration obligation landing unannounced
  • Xero set up from the start so year-end is not a last-minute crisis
  • Fixed monthly fee agreed upfront — no surprise bills or hourly rates

Huge thanks to Daniel for helping ourselves with our taxes. Being self employed means we all have to do this ourselves which is just not possible on top of our work load. Thanks again. We will be using you again.

Why DG Accountancy

What makes this practice different from the rest

Not every accountant has worked across airlines, construction and manufacturing before setting up a practice. That breadth changes the quality of the advice.

🎯

Startup Advice Grounded in Experience

Daniel has 20 years of hands-on accounting across diverse industries, so the advice you get in year one reflects what actually matters — not textbook theory. He knows which structures create problems later, which expenses are genuinely claimable and where new businesses most commonly go wrong. You get that knowledge from the first conversation.

Questions Answered the Day You Ask

When you are starting a business, questions come up constantly and waiting three days for an answer is not acceptable. DG Accountancy is known for fast, direct responses. You work with Daniel directly — no juniors, no message relays, no delays while someone finds the file.

☁️

Cloud Setup Done for You

Xero is configured, bank feeds are connected and your chart of accounts is structured correctly before you start trading in earnest. Most clients are fully onboarded within a week. From that point, your books update automatically and you can see your position in real time — without doing anything manually.

Getting started

Up and running in four steps

From first call to fully set-up accounting takes most new Devon clients less than a week. Here is what that looks like.

1

Book a free discovery call

A short, no-obligation conversation about your business, your current situation and what you need. No sales pitch — just an honest discussion about whether the fit is right and what structure makes sense for your circumstances.

2

Receive your fixed-fee quote

You get a written quote covering the services you actually need. Everything is agreed upfront — no hourly rates, no ambiguous scope, no invoices that surprise you. If you have questions about what is included, ask before you sign.

3

Xero set up and onboarded

Your Xero account is configured, bank feeds connected and any existing records imported or tidied. HMRC registrations are handled. Most clients are fully onboarded within a week and need to do very little themselves.

4

Focus on the business

Compliance runs in the background — returns filed on time, deadlines monitored, tax position visible throughout the year. You get proactive updates when something needs your attention, rather than finding out too late. Which is, frankly, how it should always have worked.

Questions

Things people ask before getting started

Should I set up as a sole trader or a limited company in Devon?+

It depends on your expected turnover, how you want to draw income and your appetite for the administrative overhead that comes with a limited company. There is no universal right answer. A short conversation about your specific situation is usually enough to land on the better option — and it is worth getting right at the start rather than restructuring later.

What does startup accounting actually cost, and what does the fee include?+

Limited company packages start from £79 per month, with 50% off for the first three months. That covers company formation, year-end accounts, Corporation Tax return and email support as standard, with VAT and payroll available as add-ons or included in higher tiers. Sole trader packages start from £41 per month. Everything is agreed in writing before you commit — no hourly rates, no invoices that arrive without warning.

I have already started trading but my books are in a mess. Can you still help?+

Yes. Catch-up bookkeeping is a regular part of what DG Accountancy handles. The state of your records at the point of switching does not prevent onboarding — it just means a catch-up piece of work is scoped and priced separately at the outset. Most clients who arrive in some degree of disarray leave that first call with a clear picture of what needs doing and what it will cost.

Is there a minimum contract or lock-in period?+

No long-term contract is required. If the service is not working for you after three months, you can leave. Your records are yours — clean, up to date and portable in Xero. There is no penalty for leaving and no data held to ransom.

When do I need to register for VAT, and will you tell me before I hit the threshold?+

The current VAT registration threshold is £90,000 in any rolling 12-month period. Your turnover is monitored as part of ongoing bookkeeping, so you will not approach that figure without being told well in advance. Voluntary registration can also make sense in certain circumstances — for example, if your customers are VAT-registered businesses. That conversation happens proactively, not reactively.

How much tax will I actually pay in my first year as a limited company?+

That depends on your profit, salary and dividend mix, and any allowable expenses. The significant advantage of working with an accountant from the start is that your tax position is visible throughout the year — not calculated for the first time after the year ends. Corporation Tax, income tax on dividends and National Insurance can all be estimated well in advance, so you are not setting money aside based on guesswork.
