Sound familiar?

Still not sure what your tax bill is going to be?

Self Assessment catches a lot of people out — not because the sums are complicated, but because nobody told them about the payments on account, the allowable expenses they have missed, or the fact the deadline is closer than they think. Left too late, a straightforward return becomes a stressful rush. And an incorrect one can mean penalties, enquiries, or simply paying more tax than necessary.

  • Not clear which expenses actually qualify, so leaving money on the table
  • Dreading the January deadline and doing it yourself late at night
  • Unsure whether last year’s return was filed correctly or completely

What a sorted return looks like

A Self Assessment handled properly means you know your tax liability well in advance, your allowable deductions are maximised within the rules, and the return lands with HMRC accurately and on time. Which is, frankly, the way it should be.

  • Every allowable expense reviewed and claimed — no guesswork, no missed deductions
  • Your tax bill calculated and communicated months before the January deadline
  • Prior returns reviewed where needed, and any corrections handled directly
  • Fixed fee agreed upfront — no hourly billing surprises after the work is done

What you get

What is included in a Self Assessment service

A fixed-fee Self Assessment with DG Accountancy covers the full return — from gathering income details to submission and HMRC liaison, with plain-English explanation throughout.

01

Your Tax Return Filed Accurately

Daniel reviews your income, allowable expenses and reliefs before filing — not after. Director returns, rental income, sole trader profits, dividends and complex income streams are all handled. You receive a clear summary of what has been submitted and what you owe, before HMRC sends anything.

Included as standard
02

Expense Review and Tax Planning

Most self-employed people underestimate what they can legitimately claim. Daniel reviews your business costs against HMRC’s allowable categories and flags anything that has been missed. The result is a lower tax bill — legally, within the rules, and documented correctly.

Included as standard
03

HMRC Liaison and Deadline Management

If HMRC writes to you, or if there is a query on your return, Daniel handles the correspondence and explains what it means in plain English. Deadlines are tracked and returns submitted well ahead of the 31 January filing date, so you are never scrambling at the last minute.

Why DG Accountancy

Why Devon clients choose Daniel for Self Assessment

There are plenty of accountants who will file a return. Fewer will explain it, price it fairly, and reply the same day you ask a question.

🎯

Expenses reviewed, not just filed

Daniel does not simply take the numbers you give him and submit them. He reviews your costs against HMRC’s allowable categories before the return goes in. Twenty years across airlines, construction, manufacturing and entertainment means he already knows the expense patterns common to most trades — you will not need to explain your business from scratch.

Questions answered the day you ask

DG Accountancy is known specifically for fast replies. You will not spend days wondering whether your accountant has seen your email. During office hours, questions get answered on the day — which matters when you have a deadline or an HMRC letter sitting on your desk.

💬

Plain English, start to finish

Tax returns come with enough technical language already. Daniel explains your tax calculation, your payment on account, and any HMRC correspondence in plain English — so you actually understand what you have paid and why. Cryptic emails and unexplained numbers are not how this practice works.

Getting started

Up and running in four steps

Most Devon clients are fully onboarded within a week. The process is designed so that your effort is minimal and the outcome is a clean, accurate return filed on time.

1

Book a free discovery call

A short call to understand your situation — what income you have, whether you are registered with HMRC for Self Assessment, and whether there are any prior years that need attention. No sales pitch, just a straightforward conversation.

2

Receive your fixed-fee quote

You will get a clear, written quote before any work begins. Everything is agreed upfront, so there are no surprises when the invoice arrives. Annual packages and monthly spread options are both available.

3

Send over your documents

Daniel will tell you exactly what is needed — bank statements, invoices, P60s, rental statements or whatever applies to your situation. Secure file sharing means no printing, no posting, and no trip to an office.

4

Return filed, tax bill known

Your return is prepared, reviewed with you in plain English, and submitted to HMRC. You know your tax liability well ahead of the deadline, your allowable deductions are maximised, and the return is done. Less to think about.

Questions

Things people usually ask before getting started

I have income from multiple sources — employment, freelance work and rental. Can you handle all of that in one return?+

Yes. A return covering employment income, self-employment profits and rental income is straightforward to consolidate — it is one return with multiple income schedules. Daniel reviews each source, checks the allowable expenses and reliefs relevant to each, and files a single return covering everything. You will not need a different accountant for each income type.

What does a Self Assessment tax return cost with DG Accountancy?+

Sole trader packages start from £41 per month, with Self Assessment included as standard. For clients who only need an annual return rather than ongoing bookkeeping support, a fixed one-off fee can be agreed upfront before any work begins. All fees are transparent and confirmed in writing — there are no hourly rates or unexpected additions.

My records are a mess and I am behind on previous years. Can you still help?+

Yes, and it is more common than you might expect. Catch-up work — whether that is one disorganised year or several unfiled returns — is handled regularly. Daniel will tell you upfront what is involved and what it will cost before you commit to anything. Getting up to date is almost always less painful than continuing to leave it.

Is there a long-term contract? What happens if I want to leave?+

There is no long-term contract. Monthly clients are on a rolling basis and can leave with reasonable notice. If you are on an annual return-only basis, there is no ongoing commitment at all. You will leave with a filed return, clean records, and nothing owed beyond the agreed fee.

What is a payment on account and will I be warned about it in advance?+

A payment on account is an advance payment toward your next year’s tax bill, required when your tax liability exceeds £1,000. It catches many people out because the amount due in January is actually higher than the tax for the year just ended. Daniel calculates this as part of preparing your return and explains it clearly before submission — so the January figure is never a surprise.

Can you advise on ways to reduce my tax bill legally, not just file the numbers?+

Yes. The return is reviewed for allowable deductions before it is filed, not submitted as-is. Where there are reliefs, allowances or structuring considerations relevant to your situation — pension contributions, capital allowances, timing of income — Daniel will flag them. The aim is a correct and optimised return, not just a completed one.

Ready when you are

Stop leaving your return until January.
