Explained Everything Simply and Clearly

Sound familiar?

Still doing your own tax returns on a Sunday evening?

Most sole traders spend more time on their books than they ever expected to. The Self Assessment deadline arrives with a bill that was never quite planned for, expenses get missed, and HMRC correspondence sits in a drawer because no one is sure what to do with it. None of this is unusual. It is also largely avoidable.

  • Self Assessment filed in a rush with no certainty you have claimed everything you are entitled to
  • No clear picture of your tax liability until the bill actually arrives
  • Hours lost trying to keep bookkeeping current on top of running the business

What sorted looks like

Clean books, a tax return filed months before the deadline, and a clear number for what you owe. Expenses properly identified. An accountant who already knows how sole trader businesses work and answers questions the day you ask them.

  • Self Assessment filed thoroughly and on time, with every allowable expense considered
  • Your tax position visible throughout the year, not just in January
  • Bookkeeping handled monthly via Xero so you are never scrambling at year end
  • Fixed monthly fee agreed upfront so there are no surprise invoices

What sole traders say after working with us

These are clients who came in with accounts to sort, deadlines to meet and questions they had been putting off. Here is what they found.

★★★★★

I worked with Daniel at DG Accountancy to review and sign off my sole trader accounts for a time-sensitive mortgage application, and the service was excellent. Daniel was extremely responsive, clear, and professional throughout. He understood exactly what the lender required, turned everything around very quickly without cutting corners. Communication was straightforward and reassuring, which made a potentially stressful part of the mortgage process much easier. Fees were transparent, turnaround was fast, and the work was done thoroughly and accurately. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Daniel to anyone needing reliable accountancy support, particularly where deadlines really matter.

Daniel was very helpful with my books and tax return. He offered great advise and insight in how to manage my books better and more efficiently. His knowledge in tax law and what can be used for expenses really helped with saving money where I could. As a sole trader it’s really hard to keep on top of things and have now asked Dan to do monthly books for me. His rates are extremely good compared to some other accountants out there and I get more for my money.

Why DG Accountancy

Why sole traders choose to work with Daniel

There is no shortage of accountants. What is less common is one who already knows how self-employed businesses work, replies promptly and explains things without reaching for jargon.

🎯

No explaining how self-employment works

Daniel has worked with sole traders across construction, hospitality, healthcare and professional services. You will not spend the first twenty minutes of a call explaining how your income comes in or which expenses are relevant to your trade. He already has a reasonable idea. That saves time and tends to produce a more useful conversation.

Questions answered the day you ask

Sole traders often have a quick question that sits unanswered for weeks because their accountant is hard to reach. DG Accountancy is known for fast replies. You ask something on a Monday morning and you get a useful answer on Monday, not on Friday after a chase.

💬

Plain English, not tax jargon

Your obligations explained in language that makes sense. What you owe, why you owe it, when it is due and what you can do about it — without a glossary. If something changes in the tax rules that affects you, you will hear about it in a sentence you can actually act on.

Getting started

Up and running in four straightforward steps

Most sole trader clients are fully onboarded within a week. The process is designed so the heavy lifting sits with us, not you.

1

Book a free discovery call

A short conversation about your business, your current set-up and what you need from an accountant. No sales pitch, no obligation. You will leave the call knowing exactly what happens next and what it costs.

2

Receive your fixed-fee quote

A written quote tailored to your business structure and the services you need. Everything is agreed upfront. There are no hourly rates and no invoices that arrive as a surprise at the end of the year.

3

We set up your Xero account

Your Xero account is configured, bank feeds are connected and any catch-up bookkeeping is handled. If your records are in some state of disarray, that is not unusual and it is not a problem. Most clients are fully onboarded within a week.

4

Compliance handled, focus on the business

Your Self Assessment is filed accurately and on time each year. Your books are current. Your tax position is visible. Questions get answered quickly when they come up, and you are alerted to anything that needs your attention before it becomes a deadline you are running late for.

Questions

Things sole traders usually ask us

Do you understand the expenses and income patterns that come with being self-employed?+

Yes, and the specifics vary considerably by trade. Whether you are a freelance consultant, a tradesperson, a delivery driver or a hospitality worker, the allowable expenses, record-keeping requirements and income timing all work differently. Daniel has worked across sectors and will not need a lengthy briefing on how your business operates before giving a useful answer.

What does a sole trader accounting package cost, and what is included?+

Sole trader packages start from £41 per month, with a 50% discount for the first three months — so from £20.50 per month to begin. Both packages include HMRC registration, a dedicated accountant, Making Tax Digital compliance, unlimited invoices and your Self Assessment return. VAT filing is available as an add-on on the lower package and is included in the higher tier. Everything is agreed in writing upfront.

My books are behind. Can you still take me on?+

That is a common situation and not a barrier to getting started. Catch-up bookkeeping is handled as part of onboarding. The cost will depend on how far behind things are, which is discussed and agreed before any work begins. Most clients who arrive with records in some state of disarray leave the onboarding process considerably less concerned about it.

Is there a long-term contract? What happens if I want to leave?+

There is no long-term lock-in. You are not committed beyond reasonable notice. If you decide it is not the right fit, you leave with your records in good order and nothing outstanding. The aim is that you stay because the service is useful, not because the contract makes leaving awkward.

What is Making Tax Digital for Income Tax, and does it affect me as a sole trader?+

Making Tax Digital for Income Tax Self Assessment (MTD for ITSA) will require sole traders earning above the threshold to keep digital records and submit quarterly updates to HMRC using compatible software. The rollout is phased by income level. If it applies to you now or in the near future, your Xero setup and quarterly reporting will be handled as part of your package — you will not need to navigate the technical requirements yourself.

How far in advance will I know what my tax bill is going to be?+

For most sole traders on a monthly bookkeeping package, a reasonable estimate of your tax liability is available well before the January payment deadline — typically by autumn at the latest. That gives you time to set aside the right amount, or to consider any legitimate planning steps before the tax year closes. You will not be reading the final number for the first time in January.
