Sound familiar?
Still doing your own books because it seemed easier?
It rarely stays easy. Records fall behind, expenses go unrecorded, and the Self Assessment deadline creeps up before you have a clear picture of what you owe. Many sole traders in Torquay carry this quietly for years — not because they cannot afford an accountant, but because they assume it will be complicated or expensive to hand over. It usually is neither.
- Tax return filed late or in a rush without checking every expense claim
- No clear view of what your tax bill will be until HMRC tells you
- Hours spent on bookkeeping that could be spent on actual work
What sorted looks like
Your books are current, your expenses are properly recorded, and your Self Assessment is filed months before the deadline. You know what you owe before HMRC does. The parts of running your business that are not your business get handled.
- Self Assessment filed accurately and on time, with every valid expense captured
- Your tax position visible throughout the year, not just in January
- Bookkeeping off your plate — monthly, in Xero, with your bank feed connected
- Fixed monthly fee from £41 — agreed upfront, no surprises on the invoice
What sole traders in Torquay say
From first Self Assessments to ongoing monthly bookkeeping, these are the outcomes clients actually describe in their own words.
I worked with Daniel at DG Accountancy to review and sign off my sole trader accounts for a time-sensitive mortgage application, and the service was excellent. Daniel was extremely responsive, clear, and professional throughout. He understood exactly what the lender required, turned everything around very quickly without cutting corners. Communication was straightforward and reassuring, which made a potentially stressful part of the mortgage process much easier. Fees were transparent, turnaround was fast, and the work was done thoroughly and accurately. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Daniel to anyone needing reliable accountancy support, particularly where deadlines really matter.
Daniel was very helpful with my books and tax return. He offered great advise and insight in how to manage my books better and more efficiently. His knowledge in tax law and what can be used for expenses really helped with saving money where I could. As a sole trader it’s really hard to keep on top of things and have now asked Dan to do monthly books for me. His rates are extremely good compared to some other accountants out there and I get more for my money.

What makes this different from any other accountant in Torquay
There are plenty of accountants who will file your return. Fewer who will tell you something useful before you ask.
Twenty Years Across Real Businesses
Daniel’s experience spans airlines, construction, manufacturing and entertainment — industries where the numbers actually matter to operations, not just compliance. That background means he recognises the financial pressures self-employed people face before you have to explain them. You get seasoned judgement, not a fresh graduate processing your return.
Questions Answered The Same Day
DG Accountancy is specifically known for response speed. Clients mention it unprompted in reviews — not because it is unusual in principle, but because it is unusual in practice. If you send a question on a Tuesday morning, you will have an answer by Tuesday afternoon, in plain English.
Fixed Fees, Nothing Hidden
Sole trader packages start from £41 per month, agreed in writing before any work begins. No hourly rates, no surprise bills for a phone call that ran long. The quote you receive is the fee you pay — which is, frankly, the way it should always work.
Up and running in four straightforward steps
Most clients are fully onboarded within a week. The process is designed to require as little from you as possible — especially at the start.
Book a free discovery call
A short conversation about your business, your current setup, and what you actually need from an accountant. No sales pitch — just an honest discussion about whether this is the right fit. You will leave the call knowing exactly what happens next.
Receive your fixed-fee quote
A clear, written quote arrives within one working day. Everything is itemised and agreed upfront — no vague ‘from’ prices that shift once you are onboard. If the quote works for you, you confirm and the onboarding begins.
Cloud setup and handover
Your Xero account is set up (or your existing one tidied), bank feeds are connected, and any outstanding records are brought current. You share what you have; the rest is handled from there. Most clients are fully onboarded within a week.
Compliance running, books clean
Your Self Assessment is prepared with time to review it before submission. Your books are current each month. Tax planning conversations happen before deadlines, not after. The parts of being self-employed you find least useful get considerably less of your time.
“Professional service. This company does my accounts every year and i never have to worry about it. Speedy as well. I am a very happy customer.”
Things sole traders in Torquay usually ask
I have mixed income — freelance work, some PAYE, and a bit of rental income. Can you handle a return that is not straightforward?
Yes, and that combination is fairly common. Self Assessments with multiple income sources — employment income alongside self-employment profit, plus rental income — require care to get the allowances and reliefs applied correctly. Daniel has handled returns across a wide range of income structures. You will not need to pre-explain how self-employment income works before getting a useful answer.
What does sole trader accounting actually cost, and what is included?
Sole trader packages start from £41 per month, billed monthly on a fixed fee agreed before any work begins. The package includes HMRC registration (if needed), Self Assessment, Making Tax Digital compliance, unlimited invoices via Xero, and a dedicated accountant. VAT returns are available as an add-on or included in the higher tier. The first three months are available at 50% off the standard monthly rate.
My books are in a bit of a state — behind by several months. Is catch-up bookkeeping something you handle?
It is. Most clients arrive with records that are not quite where they should be — that is not unusual and not a problem. The catch-up work is scoped and quoted separately from the ongoing monthly fee so you know the cost upfront. Once the backlog is cleared, the monthly bookkeeping keeps everything current going forward.
Am I tied into a contract if I sign up?
There is no long-term contract. Services run monthly, and you can leave with reasonable notice. If it is not working for any reason, you take your records with you — your Xero data is yours, and the handover to a new accountant is straightforward. The aim is to make staying worthwhile, not leaving difficult.
Do I need to do anything once I am set up, or does it run automatically?
Very little on your end once the bank feed is connected. You will need to flag any large or unusual transactions and provide receipts for business purchases — most clients use the Xero mobile app to photograph receipts as they go. Beyond that, Daniel manages the monthly bookkeeping, VAT submissions and the annual Self Assessment preparation. You review and approve; the filing is handled.
When will I know what my tax bill is going to be this year?
Well before January. With current bookkeeping in place, your self-employment profit is visible throughout the year, so a reliable tax estimate is available at any point on request. There are no surprises at the deadline — you will know what you owe, and when, with enough time to plan for it.
Less time on the books. More on the work.
Fixed monthly fees from £41, ACCA-qualified support, and Self Assessment handled properly — no January panic, no surprise bills, no chasing your accountant for an answer.
