VAT getting harder to keep on top of?
Most Torbay business owners know they need to file quarterly — they are less sure whether they are on the right VAT scheme, whether everything is MTD-compliant, or whether their VAT threshold is about to creep up on them. Quarterly deadlines come around faster than expected. Errors cost more than people expect. And asking your current accountant a quick question often involves waiting several days for an answer.
- Quarterly VAT deadlines missed or filed with avoidable errors
- Not certain whether the business is on the right VAT scheme
- MTD rules unclear and software not connected or up to date
What compliant VAT looks like
VAT compliance handled properly means deadlines met, records accurate, and the right scheme in place for how your business actually operates. You know where you stand before HMRC sends the reminder.
- VAT returns prepared and submitted accurately, every quarter, on time
- VAT scheme reviewed so you are on the most suitable arrangement for your turnover
- Xero connected and MTD-ready from the point of onboarding
- Fixed monthly fee — no hourly billing, no invoice surprises

VAT compliance, MTD and more
Every VAT engagement covers the quarterly return, the underlying bookkeeping review, and proactive monitoring of your threshold and scheme — not just a filing service.
Quarterly VAT Returns Filed
Your VAT return is prepared from your Xero records, reviewed for accuracy, and submitted to HMRC before the deadline each quarter. Errors are caught before they reach HMRC, not after. You receive a clear summary of what has been filed and why.
Core complianceMaking Tax Digital Compliance
MTD for VAT requires digital records and software-linked filing — not a workaround. Xero is set up and connected to HMRC from the outset, so every submission is compliant from day one. If your books are behind, catch-up bookkeeping is available before the first return.
MTD-ready from day oneVAT Registration and Scheme Advice
Whether you are approaching the VAT threshold for the first time or reviewing whether the flat rate, cash accounting or annual accounting scheme suits your current turnover, Daniel will advise on the right structure for your business. Registration is handled on your behalf and confirmed in writing.
Proactive advisoryConsistent results across different businesses
Clients range from sole traders filing their first VAT return to limited companies with more complex structures — the feedback tends to say the same things.
Knowledge in Tax Law Saved Real Money
“His knowledge in tax law and what can be used for expenses really helped with saving money where I could. As a sole trader it’s really hard to keep on top of things and have now asked Dan to do monthly books for me.”
Transparent Fees, Fast, Thorough Work
“Fees were transparent, turnaround was fast, and the work was done thoroughly and accurately. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Daniel to anyone needing reliable accountancy support, particularly where deadlines really matter.”
Would Use His Expertise Again
“Absolutely recommend Daniel for all and any accounts related matter. Would use his expertise again.”
What makes the difference on VAT
There is no shortage of accountants who will file a VAT return. Fewer will tell you in advance if your threshold is at risk, explain the scheme options plainly, or answer a question the same day you ask it.
VAT Threshold Monitored Continuously
Your rolling turnover is tracked so that approaching the registration threshold does not arrive as a surprise. If a scheme change would reduce your liability, that conversation happens before the return, not after. Surprises are largely avoidable when the books are current.
Questions Answered the Day You Ask
VAT questions tend to arrive at inconvenient moments — a new contract, an unusual invoice, a letter from HMRC. DG Accountancy is known for fast replies and clear answers. You will not be left waiting days for a response to a straightforward question.
MTD-Ready Xero Setup Included
Every VAT client is onboarded onto Xero with bank feeds connected and MTD submission configured from the outset. There is no manual bridging software, no CSV uploads, no workarounds. Your digital VAT records are compliant from the first quarter.
Up and running in four steps
Most Torbay clients are fully onboarded and MTD-ready within a week. The process is straightforward — you do very little of the legwork.

What Torbay businesses usually ask
Do you handle VAT for businesses across all sectors in Torbay, including hospitality and retail?
Yes. VAT rules vary considerably by sector — hospitality businesses face partial exemption and catering rate questions, retailers contend with mixed-rate supplies, and property-related businesses encounter option-to-tax issues. Daniel’s background across construction, manufacturing and commercial sectors means sector-specific VAT treatment is familiar territory, not something that needs lengthy explanation before work begins.
What does VAT compliance actually cost, and what is included?
VAT returns are included from the Operate tier of the Limited Company package (from £195 per month) and as a standalone add-on on the Start tier. Sole trader VAT filing is included in the higher sole trader package (from £99 per month). All fees are fixed and agreed in writing before work starts — there are no hourly rates or unexpected charges for fielding a VAT query.
My VAT records are behind and I am not sure everything is correct. Can you still take me on?
That is a fairly common starting point. Catch-up bookkeeping is available to bring your records current before the first return is filed. The scope and cost of any catch-up work is assessed and agreed upfront, so there are no open-ended commitments. Most clients are fully onboarded and compliant within a week of signing up.
Is there a minimum contract term or am I tied in?
There is no long-term contract. Engagements run on a rolling monthly basis and you can leave with reasonable notice. If you do move on, your records are up to date and your Xero access remains yours. The aim is to make the relationship worth staying in, not to make leaving difficult.
Do you handle VAT registrations and deregistrations as well as ongoing returns?
Yes. If your turnover is approaching the registration threshold, or if you wish to register voluntarily, Daniel will advise on timing and scheme selection before handling the registration with HMRC on your behalf. Deregistrations are handled in the same way. The advice on which VAT scheme — standard, flat rate, cash accounting or annual accounting — is part of the initial conversation, not an add-on.
Can you help me reduce my VAT liability legally?
In some cases, yes. The flat rate scheme can produce a cash advantage for certain service businesses, particularly where input VAT recovery is low. For businesses with significant capital expenditure, the timing of registration can affect recoverability. These are the kinds of conversations that happen proactively rather than only at year end.
