Sound familiar?
VAT quarter comes around faster than it should.
For most business owners, quarterly VAT returns are a recurring source of low-level dread. Records need to be in order, the numbers need to be right, and HMRC’s MTD rules add another layer of administration. Miss the deadline and there is a penalty. File incorrectly and there is a correction to make, usually at the least convenient moment.
- Quarterly deadline approaching and records not in shape to file from
- Unsure whether you are on the right VAT scheme for your turnover and margins
- Making Tax Digital requirements adding complexity without anyone explaining what is actually needed
What sorted looks like
Your Xero records are current, your VAT position is visible throughout the quarter, and the return is filed before the deadline — without you doing the chasing. That is the arrangement, and it runs like that every quarter.
- Books kept current in Xero so the return can be filed from clean data
- Right VAT scheme confirmed upfront — flat rate, cash or standard, whichever costs less
- MTD-compliant digital records maintained automatically, no extra steps on your part
- Fixed monthly fee agreed upfront — no surprises when the quarter closes
What clients say about working with Daniel
Across sole traders, limited companies and self-employed professionals, the same themes come through: fast, clear, and no jargon.
Huge thanks to Daniel for helping ourselves with our taxes! Being self employed means we all have to do this ourselves which is just not possible on top of our work load. Thanks again! We will be using you again!
Absolutely recommend Daniel for all and any accounts related matter. Would use his expertise again. He is the most amazing person, very professional, explaining every detail meticulously in order to finalise our accounts. A huge thank you Daniel.
Everything your VAT compliance needs
From registration through to quarterly filing and MTD records, the service covers the full VAT obligation — so nothing falls through the gaps.
Quarterly VAT Returns, Filed On Time
Your return is prepared from up-to-date Xero records and submitted to HMRC before the deadline, every quarter. Output tax, input tax and any adjustments are reviewed for accuracy before anything is submitted. You see the figures before they go in, and you approve the return — no black boxes.
Included as standardMTD Setup and Digital Records
Making Tax Digital for VAT requires digital record-keeping linked directly to your HMRC submissions. Xero handles this automatically once set up correctly, which means your MTD obligation is met without any additional work on your part. If you are not yet on Xero, onboarding typically takes less than a week.
Included as standardVAT Registration and Scheme Advice
Whether you are approaching the registration threshold, registering voluntarily, or considering whether the flat rate scheme is worth it for your margin structure, that conversation is part of the service. Your VAT threshold is monitored so you will not cross it without knowing. Scheme options are explained in plain English, with a clear recommendation.
Included as standardConsistently five stars across every engagement
Eight verified Google reviews, all five stars. Clients range from sole traders to limited companies, across sectors and income structures.
Fast Turnaround Where Deadlines Really Mattered
“I worked with Daniel at DG Accountancy to review and sign off my sole trader accounts for a time-sensitive mortgage application, and the service was excellent. Daniel was extremely responsive, clear, and professional throughout.”
Quick, Efficient and Friendly Throughout
“Excellent service providing financial accounts for probate. Quick, efficient and friendly. Would highly recommend.”
Tax Knowledge That Saved Real Money
“His knowledge in tax law and what can be used for expenses really helped with saving money where I could. As a sole trader it’s really hard to keep on top of things and have now asked Dan to do monthly books for me.”
What makes this different from filing it yourself
Three reasons clients stop dreading the VAT quarter once they are with DG Accountancy.
No Surprise Liabilities at Quarter End
Because your Xero records are maintained throughout the quarter rather than reconstructed at the deadline, the VAT position is visible at any point. There are no scrambles, no last-minute corrections, and no unexpectedly large bills you were not expecting. Surprises are largely avoidable when the books are current.
Questions Answered the Day You Ask
VAT queries rarely wait for a convenient moment — a supplier asks about reverse charge, a customer disputes zero-rating, an HMRC letter arrives. DG Accountancy is known for same-day replies, which means you get a clear answer when you need it rather than three days later when the moment has passed.
MTD Compliance Without the Administration
Making Tax Digital requires digital records linked directly to HMRC submissions. Xero, set up correctly, handles this automatically — your MTD obligation is met as a byproduct of having your books kept properly, not as a separate task. Which is, frankly, the way it should be.
Up and running in four steps
Most clients are fully onboarded and MTD-compliant within a week. Here is what the process looks like from your side.
Book a free discovery call
A short conversation about your business, your current VAT position and what you need. No sales pitch — just an honest assessment of whether the service is the right fit and what it would cost.
Get your fixed-fee quote
You receive a written quote covering your VAT returns and any additional services you need. Everything is agreed upfront, so the fee on month one is the fee on month twelve.
Xero set up and connected
Your Xero account is set up (or tidied up if you already have one), bank feeds connected and MTD authorisation completed. Most clients are fully onboarded within a week, with no technical work required from them.
Returns filed, records kept current
From that point forward, your quarterly VAT returns are prepared and filed before each deadline, your digital records are maintained throughout, and you have an ACCA-qualified accountant available whenever a question comes up. Considerably less to think about, which is the arrangement most clients were looking for.
“Professional service. This company does my accounts every year and i never have to worry about it. Speedy as well. I am a very happy customer.”
Common questions about VAT returns
Do you handle VAT for businesses on the flat rate, cash accounting or annual accounting schemes?
Yes. The right VAT scheme depends on your sector, turnover and margin structure, and the recommendation is part of the service. Flat rate can produce meaningful savings for some businesses and cost more for others — that assessment is done at the outset, not left to you to work out. Scheme changes are handled with HMRC directly.
What does VAT return support cost, and what is included?
Quarterly VAT filing is included from the Operate package upward for limited companies, and included in the higher sole trader tier. For limited companies on the Start package it is available as an add-on. All fees are fixed monthly amounts agreed upfront — there are no hourly rates and no per-return charges on top of your monthly fee.
My VAT records are in a mess. Can you still help?
Yes, and this is not unusual. Catch-up bookkeeping to bring Xero up to date before the next return is quoted separately and transparently — you will know the cost before any work begins. Once the records are current, the quarterly cycle runs without the same level of effort. Most clients arrive with books in some state of disarray and leave with considerably less to worry about.
Is there a long-term contract?
No. There is no minimum term beyond the current month. If the arrangement is not working, you give notice and leave with clean, MTD-compliant Xero records and all your filings up to date. Nothing is held back.
What happens if HMRC queries my VAT return or sends a compliance check letter?
HMRC correspondence is handled directly. If a VAT return triggers a query or a compliance check is opened, that is managed as part of the service — you do not need to correspond with HMRC yourself or decode their letters. Professional indemnity insurance is in place through AXA XL with coverage of £250,000.
Can you advise on VAT registration timing — voluntary versus compulsory?
Yes. Voluntary registration can be worthwhile if you have significant VAT-bearing costs to reclaim, even below the compulsory threshold. Compulsory registration is triggered at £90,000 turnover over any rolling 12-month period, and the threshold is monitored throughout the year so you are not caught out. The decision on timing is a practical one and the advice is included in the service.
