Sound familiar?
Self-employed and still doing your own accounts?
Most sole traders in Paignton start doing their books themselves — and then carry on doing it long after it stops making sense. The Self Assessment deadline creeps up, the records are behind, and the tax bill is always a bit of a surprise. It is not that it cannot be managed. It is just that it probably should not be you doing it.
- ✕ Self Assessment left until January, figures guessed under pressure
- ✕ No clear picture of what you owe until the bill arrives
- ✕ Hours lost keeping records tidy instead of running the business
What sorted looks like
Clean records through the year, a known tax bill well before the deadline, and an accountant you can actually get hold of when something comes up. That is what the service is built to deliver.
- ✓ Self Assessment prepared and filed accurately, well before January
- ✓ Tax position monitored through the year — no end-of-year surprises
- ✓ Bookkeeping handled monthly so your records are always current
- ✓ Fixed monthly fee from £41 — agreed upfront, no surprise invoices
What sole traders say about the service
These are two clients who came in with exactly the sort of situation described above. Both left considerably less worried about their books.
I worked with Daniel at DG Accountancy to review and sign off my sole trader accounts for a time-sensitive mortgage application, and the service was excellent. Daniel was extremely responsive, clear, and professional throughout. He understood exactly what the lender required, turned everything around very quickly without cutting corners. Communication was straightforward and reassuring, which made a potentially stressful part of the mortgage process much easier. Fees were transparent, turnaround was fast, and the work was done thoroughly and accurately. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Daniel to anyone needing reliable accountancy support, particularly where deadlines really matter.
Daniel was very helpful with my books and tax return. He offered great advise and insight in how to manage my books better and more efficiently. His knowledge in tax law and what can be used for expenses really helped with saving money where I could. As a sole trader it’s really hard to keep on top of things and have now asked Dan to do monthly books for me. His rates are extremely good compared to some other accountants out there and I get more for my money.
Everything a sole trader in Paignton needs
The sole trader packages cover the essentials — Self Assessment, bookkeeping and HMRC compliance — with VAT filing available as a straightforward add-on for those over the threshold.
Self Assessment, Filed Accurately
Your annual tax return is prepared from your records, checked for allowable expenses, and submitted to HMRC before the deadline. You will know your tax liability well in advance — not the week before it is due. If HMRC writes to you about it, that correspondence comes to us first.
Included as standardBookkeeping Kept Current
Monthly bookkeeping via Xero means your records are always up to date and MTD-ready. No scramble at year-end to reconstruct twelve months of transactions from bank statements. Your figures are visible in real time, and Making Tax Digital compliance is handled as part of the package.
Included as standardVAT Returns and HMRC Registration
If you are registered for VAT — or approaching the threshold — quarterly VAT returns are filed accurately and on time. Your VAT threshold is monitored so you will not cross it without knowing. HMRC registration for new sole traders is included in both packages.
VAT filing — included or add-onConsistently good across every type of job
These reviews cover different services and situations — the consistent thread is fast turnaround, clear communication and fees that do exactly what they say on the tin.
Professional Service, Never Had To Worry
“Professional service. This company does my accounts every year and i never have to worry about it. Speedy as well. I am a very happy customer.”
Quick, Efficient and Genuinely Friendly
“Excellent service providing financial accounts for probate. Quick, efficient and friendly. Would highly recommend.”
Patient, Clear and Impossible To Fault
“Daniel was very helpful and patient with me when I had no clue what to do and spoke through everything with me and made it clear, couldn’t recommend him enough, thank you again.”
What makes the difference for sole traders
There is no shortage of accountants. What is rather rarer is one who replies quickly, explains things plainly, and already understands how self-employed income actually works.
Twenty Years of Real-World Knowledge
Daniel has worked across airlines, construction, manufacturing and entertainment — industries full of self-employed professionals, contractors and sole traders with complicated income. You will not need to explain your situation from scratch before getting a useful answer. That breadth of experience is what you are actually paying for.
Questions Answered the Day You Ask
DG Accountancy is built around responsiveness. If something comes up — an HMRC letter, a question about an expense, uncertainty about the VAT threshold — you get a clear answer quickly. Waiting days for a reply on something straightforward is not how this works.
Plain English, Every Time
Tax has its own vocabulary, and most of it is unhelpful to people running a business. Daniel explains your obligations, your options and your numbers in language that actually makes sense. You understand what you owe, why you owe it, and what — if anything — can be done about it.
Up and running in four straightforward steps
Most clients are fully onboarded within a week. The process is designed to need as little from you as possible at the start.
Book a free discovery call
A short conversation about your business, your current set-up, and what you need from an accountant. No sales pitch — just an honest discussion about whether the service is a good fit for your situation.
Receive your fixed-fee quote
You will get a clear, written quote based on your specific circumstances — turnover, VAT status, whether you need payroll. Everything is agreed upfront. No hourly rates, no unexpected invoices later.
Onboarding and Xero setup
Your Xero account is set up (or tidied up, if you already have one), bank feeds are connected, and the necessary information is gathered. Most sole traders are fully onboarded within a week, with very little effort required on their part.
Compliance handled, tax visible
Your books are kept current, your Self Assessment is prepared in good time, and your tax bill is known well before the deadline. You get on with the business. We handle the part you have been putting off.
“Fantastic service provided. Thank you.”
Things sole traders usually want to know
I am self-employed with mixed income streams — can you handle something that is not straightforward?
Yes. Sole traders with multiple income sources, rental income alongside self-employment, or income from several clients across different sectors are fairly typical. The Self Assessment process accounts for all of it. If there are allowable expenses, capital allowances or overlapping income types to consider, those are worked through properly rather than ignored.
What does the sole trader package cost, and what is actually included?
Sole trader packages start from £41 per month, with a 50% discount for the first three months. Both tiers include HMRC registration, a dedicated accountant, Making Tax Digital compliance, unlimited invoices and your Self Assessment tax return. VAT filing is included in the higher tier and available as an add-on at the lower. Everything is agreed in writing upfront — no hourly rates and no surprise bills.
My books are behind and I am not sure what state they are in — is that a problem?
It is fairly common to start with records that need some attention. A catch-up exercise is carried out to bring everything up to date before the ongoing service begins. The cost of any catch-up work is scoped and quoted before anything starts, so there are no surprises. Once the books are current, keeping them that way is straightforward.
Is there a minimum contract, and what happens if I want to leave?
There is no long-term lock-in. If the arrangement is not working after a few months, you can leave without penalty. Your records and Xero data are yours — they are handed over cleanly so you can continue with another accountant without disruption. Which is, frankly, how it should be.
Do I need to worry about Making Tax Digital as a sole trader?
MTD for Income Tax is being rolled out for self-employed individuals and landlords, starting with those earning above £50,000 from April 2026 and extending further thereafter. Both sole trader packages include MTD compliance, so your record-keeping and quarterly submissions will be set up correctly before the obligations apply to you. You will not need to figure out the requirements yourself.
Can you help me understand what my tax bill is likely to be before January?
Yes, and that is rather the point. With bookkeeping kept current through the year, your taxable profit is visible well before the Self Assessment deadline. A tax estimate can be provided once there is enough information to do so reliably — usually mid-year for most sole traders. Knowing the figure in advance means you can set money aside without guessing.
Stop putting the accounts off. Get them sorted.
A fixed monthly fee covers your Self Assessment, bookkeeping and HMRC compliance. Agreed upfront, no surprises — and 50% off for the first three months.
