Sound familiar?
CIS is fiddly. Most accountants treat it as an afterthought.
Monthly returns, subcontractor verifications, deduction statements and reclaims through Self Assessment — each step is manageable on its own. Together, and on top of running a construction business, they tend to pile up. Missed deadlines trigger HMRC penalties. Deductions go unreclaimed. And if you’re a contractor with subbies on the books, the compliance obligations only multiply.
- CIS monthly returns filed late or missed, triggering HMRC penalties
- CIS deductions sitting unreclaimed because no one got round to the Self Assessment
- Subcontractor verification and deduction statements managed manually, if at all
What a properly managed CIS looks like
With the right setup, CIS runs in the background without demanding your attention every month. Returns go in on time, deductions get reclaimed, and your records are clean enough to survive HMRC scrutiny if it ever comes.
- Monthly CIS returns filed before the deadline, every month, without chasing
- CIS deductions tracked and reclaimed in full through your Self Assessment or payroll offset
- Subcontractor verifications and deduction statements handled as part of the service
- Fixed monthly fee — no surprise bills when filing season comes around
What contractors say after switching
Clients working across construction and trades come to DG Accountancy because compliance has started to feel unmanageable. They leave with considerably less to think about.
Daniel was very helpful with my books and tax return. He offered great advise and insight in how to manage my books better and more efficiently. His knowledge in tax law and what can be used for expenses really helped with saving money where I could. As a sole trader it’s really hard to keep on top of things and have now asked Dan to do monthly books for me. His rates are extremely good compared to some other accountants out there and I get more for my money.
I worked with Daniel at DG Accountancy to review and sign off my sole trader accounts for a time-sensitive mortgage application, and the service was excellent. Daniel was extremely responsive, clear, and professional throughout. He understood exactly what the lender required, turned everything around very quickly without cutting corners. Communication was straightforward and reassuring, which made a potentially stressful part of the mortgage process much easier. Fees were transparent, turnaround was fast, and the work was done thoroughly and accurately. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Daniel to anyone needing reliable accountancy support, particularly where deadlines really matter.
Everything the CIS scheme requires, covered.
From monthly returns and subcontractor verification to year-end accounts and tax reclaims — it is all included in a single fixed monthly fee, tailored to your structure.
Monthly CIS Returns Filed
Your monthly CIS return is submitted to HMRC by the 19th of each month without you needing to prompt it. Subcontractor payment and deduction details are recorded accurately, and deduction statements go out to your subbies on time. HMRC penalties for late submission start at £100 and escalate — this is one obligation that is straightforward to keep clean.
Included as standardDeduction Reclaims and Self Assessment
If you are a subcontractor having CIS tax deducted at source, those deductions are a prepayment of your tax bill — and they need to be reclaimed properly through your Self Assessment or, if you operate through a limited company, offset against your PAYE liability. Daniel manages the reclaim process so nothing sits unclaimed at HMRC. For most subcontractors, this is money already deducted that simply needs to be recovered.
Included for subbiesPayroll, PAYE and CIS Integration
When CIS and payroll intersect — as they do for limited company subcontractors and for contractors paying a mix of employed and self-employed labour — the interactions between PAYE, RTI and CIS deduction offsets need to be managed together. Getting them wrong in isolation is easy; getting them right as a joined-up system is what makes the difference at year end. It is all managed in Xero, updated monthly.
Cloud-based via XeroEight five-star reviews. Zero prompted.
Clients range from sole traders and contractors to limited companies and professional service providers. The consistent theme is that things got clearer, faster, and considerably less time-consuming.
Self-Employment Tax Sorted On Time, Every Time
“Huge thanks to Daniel for helping ourselves with our taxes! Being self employed means we all have to do this ourselves which is just not possible on top of our work load. Thanks again! We will be using you again!”
Never Have to Worry About Accounts
“Professional service. This company does my accounts every year and i never have to worry about it. Speedy as well. I am a very happy customer.”
Quick, Efficient and Friendly Probate Accounts
“Excellent service providing financial accounts for probate. Quick, efficient and friendly. Would highly recommend.”
What you get that most accountants do not offer
There is no shortage of accountants who will file your CIS return. Fewer will proactively flag when a deduction has gone unreclaimed, or notice that your gross payment status is worth applying for.
Construction experience, not guesswork
Daniel’s 20 years of cross-sector experience includes construction, so CIS is not a niche he reads up on before your call. He already knows how contractor and subcontractor relationships work in practice, how labour-only and supply-and-fix distinctions affect CIS obligations, and where the common errors tend to appear. You will not need to explain your industry before getting a useful answer.
Questions answered the same day
CIS throws up practical questions at inconvenient times — a new subcontractor starting on Monday, a deduction statement queried by a subbi on Friday. DG Accountancy is known for same-day replies during office hours. You will not be waiting three days for a simple verification question to be answered while work is on hold.
Gross payment status monitored proactively
Gross payment status — where HMRC pays subcontractors in full without deducting CIS tax — is worth applying for once your turnover and compliance record qualify. Most accountants wait to be asked. Daniel flags it when the conditions are met, because it improves your cash flow in a way that is otherwise easy to miss.
Up and running in four straightforward steps.
Most CIS clients are fully onboarded within a week. The process is designed so you do as little as possible and we handle the rest.
Book a free discovery call
We will talk through your CIS setup — whether you are a contractor, subcontractor or both, how many subbies you pay, your current software and where things are getting complicated. No sales pitch, just an honest conversation about whether we are the right fit.
Receive your fixed-fee quote
You will get a clear, written quote covering everything you need — monthly CIS returns, payroll, year-end accounts, Self Assessment, whatever applies to your structure. Everything is agreed upfront so there are no surprises at year end.
Onboarding and Xero setup
We set up or tidy your Xero account, connect your bank feeds and pull together your subcontractor records. If your books are behind or in some disarray, that is not unusual — we handle the catch-up. Most clients are fully onboarded within a week.
Compliance runs, you build
CIS returns go in every month without you having to think about them. Deductions are tracked, reclaims are handled, and you get plain-English updates whenever something needs your attention. You focus on the jobs. The compliance runs itself in the background.
“Absolutely recommend Daniel for all and any accounts related matter. Would use his expertise again. He is the most amazing person, very professional, explaining every detail meticulously in order to finalise our accounts. A huge thank you Daniel.”
Things people usually ask before starting
Do you handle both contractor and subcontractor CIS obligations, or just one side?
Both. If you are a contractor, we manage monthly CIS returns, subcontractor verifications and deduction statements. If you are a subcontractor, we track deductions made against you and ensure they are reclaimed correctly through your Self Assessment or, for a limited company, offset against your PAYE liability. If you are operating as both — which is common in construction — the obligations on each side are managed together.
What does CIS accounting actually cost, and what is included in the monthly fee?
Fees are fixed monthly and agreed upfront based on your structure and the volume of work involved — number of subcontractors, whether you need payroll, whether you are a sole trader or limited company. There are no hourly rates and no surprise bills when filing season arrives. You will receive a written quote before anything is agreed, so you know exactly what you are paying and what it covers.
My CIS records are behind — months of returns unfiled and deductions untracked. Can you still help?
Yes, and it is not an unusual starting point. We will assess what needs catching up, what penalties may already be accruing and the most efficient way to get things current. Catch-up work is quoted separately and transparently before we start — there are no nasty surprises in the first invoice. Once you are up to date, the monthly service keeps you there.
Is there a minimum contract length or a penalty for leaving?
No minimum term. The service runs monthly and you can leave with reasonable notice. If you decide to move on, you leave with clean records, properly filed returns and everything you need to hand to a new accountant. No exit fees, no withheld documents.
How does gross payment status work and is it worth applying for?
Gross payment status means HMRC pays you in full without deducting CIS tax at source, which significantly improves cash flow for subcontractors. To qualify, your business must meet certain turnover thresholds and have a clean compliance record across tax, VAT and CIS. If you are getting close to qualifying, Daniel will flag it — applying at the right time and with the right supporting evidence makes a material difference to the outcome.
Can you advise on whether a worker should be on CIS or on the payroll instead?
Yes. The distinction between a CIS subcontractor and an employee is one HMRC scrutinises, and getting it wrong can mean backdated PAYE, NICs and penalties. The test involves looking at how the working relationship actually operates — control, substitution, equipment ownership and so on — not just what the contract says. It is worth getting right before payments start, not after HMRC raises a query.
