Sound familiar?
Starting a company and not sure what comes first?
Most new business owners in Paignton know they need an accountant eventually — they just are not sure whether to register as a sole trader or limited company, when VAT kicks in, or how payroll actually works. These are not stupid questions. They are the questions nobody thinks to answer until something goes wrong.
- Not sure whether to incorporate or stay as a sole trader
- HMRC registrations piling up with no clear sense of what is urgent
- No bookkeeping system in place, so records are already falling behind
What a properly set-up startup looks like
The right structure from the start saves money, avoids penalties, and removes a recurring source of stress. Most new clients are fully onboarded within a week, with Xero live and HMRC registrations handled.
- Your company structure chosen correctly, with a clear reason why
- HMRC registrations filed in the right order, before penalties apply
- Xero connected, bank feeds live, books clean from month one
- Fixed monthly fee agreed upfront — no surprise invoices as your business grows
What new clients say about getting started
From sole traders registering for the first time to limited companies getting properly set up, the feedback tends to say the same thing.
Huge thanks to Daniel for helping ourselves with our taxes! Being self employed means we all have to do this ourselves which is just not possible on top of our work load. Thanks again! We will be using you again!
Absolutely recommend Daniel for all and any accounts related matter. Would use his expertise again. He is the most amazing person, very professional, explaining every detail meticulously in order to finalise our accounts. A huge thank you Daniel.

Company Formation and Setup
Your limited company is registered at Companies House with the right structure from the start. Director and shareholder details, SIC codes, registered office — handled correctly so you are not unpicking mistakes later. PAYE, VAT and Corporation Tax registrations follow in the right sequence.

What makes this different from the next accountant on the list
Any accountant can file a return. Fewer will explain what it means, reply the same day, or flag a problem before it becomes one.
Twenty Years Across Real Businesses
Daniel has worked in airlines, construction, manufacturing and entertainment — not just in practice. That means he has seen the mistakes new business owners make across a range of industries and knows how to avoid them. You get that experience from the first conversation, not once you are already a long-standing client.
Questions Answered the Day You Ask
When you are starting out, small uncertainties become big ones quickly if nobody answers them. DG Accountancy is known for fast, clear replies — not a ticket system or a callback within five working days. Ask the question, get a useful answer.
Cloud-First, No Paperwork Required
Everything runs through Xero, which means your books are accessible in real time, your bank feeds reconcile automatically, and you are MTD-ready before the deadline matters. There is no need to post receipts or wait for someone to open a ledger. It works wherever you are.
Up and running in four straightforward steps
Most new clients are fully onboarded within a week. The process is designed to put as little on your plate as possible.
Book a free discovery call
A short call to talk through your business, your current situation, and what you actually need. No sales pitch — just an honest conversation about whether this is the right fit and what the right structure looks like for you.
Receive your fixed-fee quote
You get a clear, written quote tailored to your business structure and the services you need. Everything is agreed upfront. There are no hourly rates and no surprise invoices when things take slightly longer than expected.
Onboarding and Xero setup
Your Xero account is created and configured, bank feeds connected, and HMRC registrations handled. If you are forming a company, that is done at this stage too. Most clients are fully live within a week of signing.
Compliance runs, you focus on growing
VAT returns, payroll, year-end accounts and Corporation Tax are handled on schedule without you having to chase anything. You get plain-English updates when something needs your attention and proactive advice when something could be done better. Which is, frankly, the way it should be.
“Daniel was very helpful and patient with me when I had no clue what to do and spoke through everything with me and made it clear, couldn’t recommend him enough, thank you again.”
Things most new clients ask before getting started
Should I set up as a limited company or stay as a sole trader in Paignton?
It depends on your turnover, how you want to extract profit, and your appetite for admin. A limited company can be more tax-efficient once profits exceed a certain threshold, but there are additional filing obligations. Daniel will walk through both options with you on the discovery call and give you a clear recommendation based on your actual numbers — not a generic answer.
What does startup accounting actually cost?
Limited company packages start from £79 per month, with sole trader packages from £41 per month. Both include a 50% discount for the first three months. Company formation, year-end accounts, Corporation Tax and Self Assessment are all included depending on the package. You receive a written quote before anything starts, so the fee is agreed upfront and does not change without a conversation.
What if I have already started trading and my books are in a state?
That is a fairly common starting point. Catch-up bookkeeping is available to bring records up to date before ongoing monthly work begins. The cost depends on how far behind things are and how many transactions need reconciling — Daniel will assess this and include it in your quote so there are no surprises.
Am I locked into a long-term contract?
No. There is no minimum term. If the arrangement is not working after a few months, you can leave with your books in order and nothing outstanding. The aim is to be worth staying with — not to make leaving difficult.
Do you handle VAT registration and the first return if my startup crosses the threshold?
Yes. VAT registration is handled as part of onboarding if you are already above the threshold, or monitored on an ongoing basis so you are registered at the right time rather than retrospectively. Quarterly VAT returns are included in the Operate, Grow and Scale packages, and available as an add-on on the Start package.
How early should I think about tax planning as a new business?
Earlier than most people do. The decisions made in the first year — director salary level, dividend policy, pension contributions, allowable expenses — have a compounding effect on the tax you pay. Annual tax reviews are included from the Operate package upward, with quarterly optimisation available at the Grow and Scale levels.
