Sound familiar?

VAT quarter creeping up again?

For most Paignton business owners, VAT compliance sits somewhere between inconvenient and genuinely stressful. The quarter ends, the return is due, and the time to pull everything together never quite materialises. Figures get rushed, reclaim opportunities get missed, and the nagging worry about whether the numbers are right persists until the return is filed — and sometimes after.

  • Quarter ends arrive before the books are properly reconciled
  • Uncertainty about what can and cannot be reclaimed on inputs
  • No clear system for staying MTD-compliant as HMRC tightens the rules

What sorted looks like

Your VAT is handled quarterly as a matter of course. Transactions are coded correctly in Xero throughout the period, so when the return date arrives the figures are already there. You review, you approve, it is filed.

  • Books reconciled monthly — no last-minute scramble at quarter end
  • Input VAT correctly coded so legitimate reclaims are not left on the table
  • Xero and MTD compliance built in from the start, not bolted on later
  • One fixed monthly fee covers quarterly filing — no per-return billing

These are verbatim reviews from clients who needed accurate, timely compliance work done without the back-and-forth.

★★★★★

I worked with Daniel at DG Accountancy to review and sign off my sole trader accounts for a time-sensitive mortgage application, and the service was excellent. Daniel was extremely responsive, clear, and professional throughout. He understood exactly what the lender required, turned everything around very quickly without cutting corners. Communication was straightforward and reassuring, which made a potentially stressful part of the mortgage process much easier. Fees were transparent, turnaround was fast, and the work was done thoroughly and accurately. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Daniel to anyone needing reliable accountancy support, particularly where deadlines really matter.

What you get

VAT compliance covered, quarter to quarter

The VAT service covers the full cycle — from transaction coding through to submission — so you are not piecing it together yourself at the end of each period.

01

Quarterly VAT Return Filing

Your VAT return is prepared from reconciled Xero records and submitted to HMRC before the deadline each quarter. Input and output tax is reviewed for accuracy and appropriate reclaims are captured as standard. You see the figures before anything is filed.

Included from Operate tier
02

Making Tax Digital Compliance

All VAT returns are filed through MTD-compatible software from the outset, so there is nothing to retrofit when HMRC extends the regime. Your Xero account is the digital record HMRC requires, kept current throughout the period rather than assembled at quarter end.

MTD-ready from day one
03

VAT Registration and Scheme Advice

If your turnover is approaching the registration threshold, that is flagged before you cross it — not after. Where a different VAT scheme such as flat rate or cash accounting would benefit your business, the options are set out clearly so you can make an informed decision.

Proactive, not reactive
What clients say

Consistent results across different businesses

Why DG Accountancy

What makes this different from any other accountant

Several things are genuinely true about working with DG Accountancy that are worth knowing before you decide.

📅

No More Quarter-End Scrambles

Because your Xero records are maintained throughout the period, the VAT return is not assembled in a rush on the deadline day. The figures exist before the quarter closes. That single change removes the most common source of VAT errors and late filings.

Questions Answered the Day You Ask

DG Accountancy has a consistent track record of same-day responses, which matters when HMRC correspondence arrives or a supplier query needs a quick answer on VAT treatment. You will not be left waiting for a reply while the situation develops.

🎯

Twenty Years Across Real Businesses

Daniel has worked in airlines, construction, manufacturing and entertainment — industries with varied and sometimes complex VAT positions. That background means the common scenarios for a Paignton hospitality operator, tradesperson or property investor are already familiar territory.

Getting started

Up and running in four steps

Most clients are fully onboarded within a week. The process is straightforward and the majority of the work sits on this side of the conversation.

1

Book a free discovery call

A short conversation about your business, your current VAT set-up and what you need. No sales pitch — just an honest discussion about whether the service fits. If it does not, that is said plainly.

2

Receive your fixed-fee quote

A written quote arrives within one working day, priced to your business structure and VAT requirements. Everything is agreed before any work begins, so there are no invoice surprises later.

3

Xero set-up and onboarding

Your Xero account is configured or tidied up, bank feeds are connected, and VAT settings are verified. If your books need catching up, that is scoped and priced separately and clearly.

4

Compliance runs, you focus elsewhere

Your quarterly VAT returns are filed on schedule, your records stay MTD-compliant, and you get a plain-English summary of each return. The quarter ends and the return is simply done.

Questions

Commonly asked before signing up

Do you handle VAT for businesses on different schemes, such as flat rate or cash accounting?+

Yes. The appropriate VAT scheme for your business is discussed at the outset — flat rate, standard, cash accounting and annual accounting each have different implications depending on your margins, sector and cash flow. If you are already on a scheme that no longer serves you, that is reviewed as part of onboarding. The return process is then built around whichever scheme applies.

What does the VAT returns service cost, and what is included?+

Quarterly VAT filing is included from the Operate package upwards, which starts from £195 per month with 50% off for the first three months. That covers transaction coding in Xero, return preparation, review and MTD-compliant submission each quarter. The Start package is available from £79 per month and can include VAT as an add-on. All fees are fixed and agreed in writing before work begins.

My books are behind and my last VAT return may not be right. Can you still help?+

Yes, and this is not unusual. Catch-up bookkeeping is scoped and priced transparently at the start — you will know what it costs before any work is done. Once the records are current and reconciled, any previous return that looks incorrect can be reviewed and, where necessary, a VAT error correction submitted to HMRC through the appropriate process.

Is there a minimum contract term?+

No. There is no lock-in. If after the first three months you feel the service is not right, you give notice and leave with your Xero records in good order and no further obligation. The three-month promotional period simply reflects the time it takes to get a client properly set up and into a working rhythm — it is not a retention mechanism.

How does Making Tax Digital for VAT actually affect my business in practice?+

MTD for VAT requires VAT-registered businesses to keep digital records and submit returns through compatible software. If you are using Xero, that requirement is met from day one — there is nothing additional to configure. The practical difference for most clients is that records need to be maintained digitally throughout the quarter rather than assembled from paper at the end, which is a change that tends to reduce errors rather than add workload.

Can you advise on VAT planning, not just compliance?+

Yes. For businesses approaching the registration threshold, the timing and structure of registration can have a meaningful impact, particularly in sectors where customers are VAT-sensitive. Partial exemption, the treatment of property transactions and international supply chains are areas where proactive advice saves more than it costs. That kind of planning is part of the ongoing conversation, not a separate engagement.
