Sound familiar?
Not sure if your contracts put you inside IR35?
IR35 is one of the more consequential parts of contracting and also one of the least clearly explained. Engagers issue Status Determination Statements that may not reflect how the engagement actually works. Contracts that looked fine at the time get questioned years later. And most contractors find out their position was wrong when HMRC writes to them, not before.
- Engager issued an inside IR35 SDS but the working arrangement says otherwise
- No clear picture of the tax liability if HMRC challenges your status
- Contract wording does not reflect the genuine working practices in place
What a clear IR35 position looks like
With the right advice, IR35 does not have to be a source of ongoing uncertainty. Your status is assessed properly, your contracts reflect reality, and you know your exposure before HMRC does.
- SDS reviewed and challenged where the working arrangement justifies it
- Tax exposure calculated and documented before any investigation arises
- Contract language and working practices aligned to support your status
- Fixed monthly fee agreed upfront — no hourly surprises when you need advice fast
What contractors say after working with us
Contractors and self-employed professionals across Devon and the UK use DG Accountancy for tax advice that is direct and actually useful.
Huge thanks to Daniel for helping ourselves with our taxes! Being self employed means we all have to do this ourselves which is just not possible on top of our work load. Thanks again! We will be using you again!
Daniel was very helpful with my books and tax return. He offered great advise and insight in how to manage my books better and more efficiently. His knowledge in tax law and what can be used for expenses really helped with saving money where I could.
IR35 support that covers the full picture
From initial status review through to ongoing contract advice, the fee covers the areas where IR35 risk actually sits — not just the filing.
IR35 Status Review
Your current and upcoming engagements are assessed against the IR35 tests — control, substitution and mutuality of obligation. You get a clear written view of where you stand, not a hedged opinion. If your status is outside IR35, you will know why and have the reasoning documented.
Included as standardSDS and Contract Review
Status Determination Statements from engagers are not always accurate — particularly where blanket inside determinations have been issued. Daniel reviews the SDS against your actual working practices and advises whether it can be challenged. Contract wording is also reviewed so it supports rather than undermines your position.
Included as standardTax Exposure and Planning
If you are inside IR35 or moving between engagements, understanding the tax cost in advance removes the guesswork. Your personal and company tax position is modelled clearly so you can plan salary, dividends and expenses with accurate numbers. Proactive tax planning means you are not making decisions based on figures from last year.
Included as standardA consistent pattern across different clients
Sole traders, contractors, limited company directors and self-employed professionals across the UK — different situations, same experience.
Transparent Fees, Fast and Thorough Work
“Fees were transparent, turnaround was fast, and the work was done thoroughly and accurately. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Daniel to anyone needing reliable accountancy support, particularly where deadlines really matter.”
Patient, Clear When You Had No Idea
“Daniel was very helpful and patient with me when I had no clue what to do and spoke through everything with me and made it clear, couldn’t recommend him enough, thank you again.”
Never Have to Worry About It
“Professional service. This company does my accounts every year and i never have to worry about it. Speedy as well. I am a very happy customer.”
Why contractors in Torquay choose Daniel
IR35 advice is only as good as the accountant giving it. Here is what makes the difference in practice.
Cross-sector experience behind the advice
Daniel has worked across airlines, construction, manufacturing and entertainment over 20 years — industries where contractor and employment status questions come up constantly. That breadth means he already understands the working arrangements common to IT, engineering and professional services contracts before you explain yours. The advice is grounded in how engagements actually work, not just how they read on paper.
Answers when IR35 questions arise
IR35 issues rarely arrive at a convenient time — a new contract lands, an SDS comes in, or HMRC sends a letter. DG Accountancy is known for fast replies and clear communication. You will not wait days for an answer on something time-sensitive. Questions get a response the day you ask them.
No jargon on a jargon-heavy topic
IR35 legislation is dense and the guidance HMRC publishes is not always straightforward. Daniel explains the tests, your status and your options in plain English so you understand the position rather than just taking someone’s word for it. If your status is challenged, you will know exactly why the conclusion stands.
Up and running in four steps
Most contractors are fully onboarded within a week. The process is designed to require as little of your time as possible.
Book a free discovery call

Receive a fixed-fee quote
You will receive a written quote tailored to your company structure, number of engagements and the services required. Everything is agreed upfront. There are no hourly rates that multiply when IR35 questions take longer than expected.
Onboarding and cloud setup

Ongoing compliance and clear advice
Your IR35 position is reviewed as engagements change, your company compliance runs on schedule, and you get plain-English answers whenever a new contract or determination needs reviewing. Considerably less to think about.
“Excellent service providing financial accounts for probate. Quick, efficient and friendly. Would highly recommend.”
What contractors usually ask first
Can you actually assess whether my contract sits inside or outside IR35?
Yes. The assessment covers the three primary tests — control, substitution and mutuality of obligation — applied to how your engagement actually operates, not just what the contract says. If the working practices and the contract wording are out of step, that gap is identified and addressed. A written record of the reasoning is kept in case HMRC ever asks.
What does IR35 support cost and what is included?
Fees are fixed monthly and agreed before any work starts. For limited company contractors, packages start from £79 per month and include year-end accounts, Corporation Tax return and Self Assessment. IR35 contract and SDS reviews, tax planning and ongoing advice on status are included as part of the service rather than billed separately as ad hoc queries. The exact fee depends on your company structure and the scope of work required.
My books are behind and I have multiple contracts to sort out — is that a problem?
Catch-up work is common and it is handled without fuss. The onboarding process establishes what is outstanding across your company accounts, VAT and personal returns, and a clear plan is agreed before any work begins. Catch-up fees are quoted separately and transparently — you will know the cost before committing.
Am I locked into a long-term contract?
No. There is no minimum term beyond the initial onboarding. If the arrangement is not working after three months, you leave with your compliance up to date and nothing further owed. Most clients stay because the service works, not because they are contractually obliged to.
My engager has issued a blanket inside IR35 determination — can that be challenged?
It can, in many cases. Since the April 2021 off-payroll working reforms, engagers in the private sector are responsible for issuing Status Determination Statements, but they are required to take reasonable care in doing so. If the SDS does not reflect the genuine working arrangement, there is a formal disagreement process that Daniel can advise you through — and the SDS itself may be challengeable. The outcome depends on the specific facts of your engagement.
If I am inside IR35, how much more tax will I actually pay?
The difference varies significantly depending on your rate, company structure and dividend position, but it is quantifiable. Inside IR35, the deemed employment calculation means most of the contract income is treated as employment income, removing the tax efficiency of the salary-and-dividends structure. Daniel will model the numbers for your specific situation so you can make an informed decision about whether to accept an inside determination, renegotiate the rate, or seek a different engagement.
