Sound familiar?
Still not sure what your tax bill is going to be?
Being self-employed in Torbay means keeping on top of your accounts on top of everything else. Most sole traders end up filing their Self Assessment in a rush in January, with no clear idea what they owe until the bill arrives. The expenses you could have claimed get missed. The time you spend on it is time you are not spending on work.
- Self Assessment left until January, then filed in a panic
- Legitimate expenses missed because no one flagged them during the year
- No clear picture of what tax is owed until the bill lands
What sorted looks like for sole traders
When your accounts are handled properly, your tax return is filed early, your bill is known in advance, and your bookkeeping runs in the background without demanding your attention. Which is, frankly, the way it should be.
- Self Assessment filed early — your deadline is managed, not scrambled
- Allowable expenses reviewed throughout the year, not after the fact
- Your tax liability calculated and communicated well before it is due
- Fixed monthly fee from £41 — transparent, agreed upfront, no surprises
What sole traders in Torbay say
Both reviews below are from self-employed clients. The situations are different; the outcome is the same — less to worry about, done properly.
I worked with Daniel at DG Accountancy to review and sign off my sole trader accounts for a time-sensitive mortgage application, and the service was excellent. Daniel was extremely responsive, clear, and professional throughout. He understood exactly what the lender required, turned everything around very quickly without cutting corners. Communication was straightforward and reassuring, which made a potentially stressful part of the mortgage process much easier. Fees were transparent, turnaround was fast, and the work was done thoroughly and accurately. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Daniel to anyone needing reliable accountancy support, particularly where deadlines really matter.
Daniel was very helpful with my books and tax return. He offered great advise and insight in how to manage my books better and more efficiently. His knowledge in tax law and what can be used for expenses really helped with saving money where I could. As a sole trader it’s really hard to keep on top of things and have now asked Dan to do monthly books for me. His rates are extremely good compared to some other accountants out there and I get more for my money.

What makes this different from your current accountant
Three things that matter when you are self-employed and need an accountant to actually be useful, not just present at year-end.
20 Years of Cross-Sector Experience
Daniel has worked across construction, manufacturing, aviation and entertainment — not just in practice. That means he already understands the real financial challenges self-employed people face across different trades and professions. You will not spend the first call explaining how your business works.
Questions Answered the Day You Ask
DG Accountancy is consistently described by clients as responsive. That is not a marketing phrase — it is in every review. When a question comes up about an expense, a VAT threshold or a payment on account, you get a plain-English answer quickly, not three days later.
Fixed Fees, Nothing Hidden
Sole trader packages start from £41 per month, and the price is agreed in writing before any work begins. There are no hourly rates, no surprise invoices after a phone call, and no bill that arrives larger than expected. You know exactly what you are paying from day one.
Up and running in four straightforward steps
Most new clients are fully onboarded within a week. The process is designed to require as little from you as possible.
Book a free discovery call
A short call to talk through your business, your current set-up, and what you need from an accountant. No sales pitch — just an honest conversation about whether it is a good fit.
Receive your written quote
You will get a clear, fixed-fee quote tailored to your business structure and the services you need. Everything is agreed in writing before any work begins, so there are no surprises later.
Onboarding and Xero setup
Your Xero account is set up (or tidied up if you already have one), bank feeds are connected, and the previous year’s records are gathered. Most clients are fully onboarded within a week.
Compliance handled, questions answered
Your Self Assessment is filed on time, your bookkeeping runs in the background, and your tax position is visible throughout the year. You focus on the work. The accounts take care of themselves.
“Professional service. This company does my accounts every year and i never have to worry about it. Speedy as well. I am a very happy customer.”
What sole traders in Torbay usually ask
Do you understand the tax position for different types of sole trader — trades, consultants, landlords, hospitality?
Yes. The allowable expenses, payment on account structure and Making Tax Digital requirements differ meaningfully depending on your trade. Daniel has worked across construction, hospitality, professional services and property, so you will not need to educate him on how your sector operates before getting a useful answer.
What does a sole trader package cost, and what is included?
Sole trader packages start from £41 per month, with a 50% discount for the first three months. The package covers HMRC registration, a dedicated accountant, Making Tax Digital compliance, unlimited invoices and your Self Assessment tax return. VAT filing is available as an add-on on the entry package and is included in the higher tier. All fees are fixed and agreed upfront — no hourly rates, no surprise bills.
My books are in a bit of a state. Can you still take me on?
This is a common starting point. During onboarding, the extent of any catch-up work is assessed and quoted separately before any work begins. Once the backlog is cleared, the monthly service keeps things current so it does not happen again. There is no judgement — most people arriving without a current accountant are in exactly this position.
Is there a minimum contract? What happens if I want to leave?
There is no long-term lock-in. If it is not working for you after the first three months, you leave with your records up to date and nothing further owed. You own all your data and it can be transferred to a new accountant without any difficulty.
I am approaching the VAT registration threshold. What do I need to do?
The current registration threshold is £90,000 of taxable turnover in any rolling 12-month period. If your turnover is approaching that level, it is worth reviewing your position now rather than discovering an obligation after the fact. VAT registration, scheme selection and quarterly filing can all be added to your existing sole trader package.
How far in advance will I know what my Self Assessment tax bill is?
With bookkeeping kept current throughout the year, a provisional tax figure can be calculated several months before the January deadline. That means you can set aside the right amount without guessing, and there are no surprises when the return is filed. Payment on account calculations are also explained clearly so the July bill does not catch you off guard.
Stop guessing what your tax bill is. Get it sorted.
Fixed monthly fees from £41, Self Assessment filed on time, and an ACCA-qualified accountant who replies the same day. No long-term contract.
