Sound familiar?

Not sure if your contract actually holds up.

IR35 has been reshaping contractor tax since 2000, and the off-payroll rules introduced for the private sector in 2021 made the stakes considerably higher. Many Devon contractors are operating under contracts that look compliant on paper but do not reflect actual working practices — which is precisely what HMRC investigates. Getting it wrong means back tax, National Insurance and interest, often going back years.

  • Contract wording says substitution and control, but day-to-day reality tells a different story
  • Client has issued a blanket inside-IR35 determination without properly assessing your role
  • No clear record of working practices if HMRC ever comes asking

What a defensible IR35 position looks like

It starts with an honest assessment of your contracts and how you actually work — not just what they say. From there, you get a clear written view of your status, advice on any changes worth making, and ongoing support so your position stays current as engagements change.

  • Contracts and working practices reviewed together, so the two actually align
  • Determination challenged where the facts support it — with a paper trail behind you
  • Working-practice records maintained so your status is defensible from day one
  • Fixed monthly fee — no surprise bills if HMRC asks a question

Huge thanks to Daniel for helping ourselves with our taxes! Being self employed means we all have to do this ourselves which is just not possible on top of our work load. Thanks again! We will be using you again!

What you get

IR35 support from assessment to ongoing compliance

A practical, outcome-led service covering the three things that actually matter: knowing your status, being able to defend it, and knowing what to do when something changes.

01

IR35 Status Assessment

Your contracts and actual working practices are reviewed together against the IR35 tests — mutuality of obligation, control and personal service. You receive a clear written view of your status and, where the position is borderline, honest advice on what that means and what your options are.

Included as standard
02

Contract and Practice Alignment

A contract that says one thing while your working practices say another is an open invitation for HMRC to look closer. Daniel identifies the gaps and advises on changes — both in wording and in how engagements are actually structured — so the two tell the same story.

Proactive, not reactive
03

HMRC Enquiry Support

If HMRC opens an IR35 enquiry, you will not be left to handle correspondence alone. Daniel manages the response, assembles the evidence of your working practices, and communicates with HMRC on your behalf. Having a good paper trail from the start makes this considerably less fraught.

What clients say

Consistent results across different situations

From sole traders to limited company directors, the feedback tends to cover the same ground: clear answers, fast turnaround, and fees that make sense.

★★★★★

Responsive, Clear, Professional Under Real Deadline Pressure

“I worked with Daniel at DG Accountancy to review and sign off my sole trader accounts for a time-sensitive mortgage application, and the service was excellent. Daniel was extremely responsive, clear, and professional throughout. He understood exactly what the lender required, turned everything around very quickly without cutting corners. Communication was straightforward and reassuring, which made a potentially stressful part of the mortgage process much easier. Fees were transparent, turnaround was fast, and the work was done thoroughly and accurately. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Daniel to anyone needing reliable accountancy support, particularly where deadlines really matter.”

Great Advice, Tax Savings, Excellent Rates

“Daniel was very helpful with my books and tax return. He offered great advise and insight in how to manage my books better and more efficiently. His knowledge in tax law and what can be used for expenses really helped with saving money where I could. As a sole trader it’s really hard to keep on top of things and have now asked Dan to do monthly books for me. His rates are extremely good compared to some other accountants out there and I get more for my money.”

Why DG Accountancy

What makes a practical difference for contractors

IR35 advice is only as good as the understanding behind it. Here is what that looks like in practice.

🎯

Cross-sector contractor experience

Daniel has worked across construction, manufacturing, airlines and entertainment — sectors where contractor relationships vary enormously. He understands how different engagement structures are scrutinised by HMRC and what a genuinely defensible position looks like in each. You will not be getting generic IR35 commentary lifted from a website.

📋

Contracts reviewed, not just read

The difference between a compliant contract and a compliant engagement is the bit most accountants skip. Daniel looks at both — what the contract says and how the role actually operates day to day. That dual assessment is what gives the status determination its weight when HMRC comes looking.

Questions answered the same day

Contractor tax moves quickly. Engagements change, clients issue new determinations, HMRC sends letters. DG Accountancy is known for fast, clear replies — you will not be left waiting three days for a basic answer while a deadline ticks. Most questions are answered the day they are asked.

Getting started

Up and running in four steps.

Most contractors are onboarded and have their initial IR35 assessment complete within a week of the first call. Here is how it works.

1

Book a free discovery call

We talk through your current engagements, how you operate day to day, and whether there is an IR35 concern worth addressing. No sales pitch — just an honest conversation about where you stand and whether working together makes sense.

2

Receive your fixed-fee quote

You get a clear, written quote covering the services relevant to your situation. Everything is agreed upfront — no hourly rates, no unexpected additions. If the scope changes later, that conversation happens before any extra work does.

3

Contracts and practices reviewed

Send over your current contracts and a description of how your engagement actually works. Daniel reviews both, raises any gaps, and produces a written status assessment. If there are changes worth making, they are flagged with plain-English reasoning.

4

Compliance handled, position maintained

Ongoing monitoring means your position is kept current as engagements change or new ones start. Your compliance runs in the background, your records are in order, and if HMRC ever does get in touch, you will not be starting from scratch.

Questions

Things contractors in Devon usually ask

Can you actually assess whether my contract is inside or outside IR35 — not just give me a general overview?+

Yes. The assessment covers both the contract wording and your actual working practices — mutuality of obligation, the right of control, and personal service. A contract alone tells about half the story; HMRC is interested in the other half. The written assessment you receive reflects both, with a clear view of the risk level and, where relevant, what would strengthen your position.

What does IR35 compliance support cost, and what is included?+

Pricing depends on your situation — a contractor with a single active engagement and a straightforward contract needs less than someone juggling multiple engagements with contested determinations. A fixed-fee quote is provided after the discovery call, covering contract and practice review, written status assessment, and ongoing monitoring. No hourly rates, no surprises.

I have been operating for years without ever properly addressing IR35. Is it too late to sort it out?+

It is not too late, but the sooner the position is assessed, the better. The first step is understanding where you currently stand — not every historic engagement will be a problem, and panicking rarely helps. Daniel will review what is relevant, give you an honest picture, and work out the most practical way forward from there.

Is there a long-term contract I have to sign up to?+

No. There is no minimum term. If after three months the arrangement is not working for you, you can leave with your records in order and nothing further owed. Most clients stay because the service is useful, not because they are locked in.

My end client has issued a blanket inside-IR35 determination. Can that be challenged?+

It can, where the facts support a different conclusion. Under the off-payroll rules, contractors have the right to request the reasons behind a Status Determination Statement and to raise a formal disagreement. Daniel can assess whether your working practices justify a challenge, help you frame the response, and advise on the practical implications either way — including whether working inside IR35 through an umbrella company changes your tax position significantly.

If I am found to be inside IR35, what does that mean for my limited company tax position?+

Inside IR35 means the fees from that engagement are treated as deemed employment income for tax and National Insurance purposes — broadly, the company pays the tax as if you were employed, and the efficiency of operating through a limited company is largely removed for that contract. The company itself still exists and can take on outside-IR35 work. Daniel can model the practical difference and advise on whether the company structure remains worthwhile given your overall mix of engagements.
